Those are both great entry level downriggers that are designed for boats just like yours.
If you can do the 1060 the two feet per crank is a huge advantage when fishing deep.

Re: down rigger
I just mounted a pair of Scotty 1060 downriggers on my 14ft Klamath.I used some aluminum flat bar I had with the included mounting plates and they mounted up great. See my post from a month or two ago for some pics. The Scotty 1060 models are a great downrigger for the $$$.

Re: down rigger
I have a pair of Scotty 1080 hand downriggers but prefer my friend's Cannon hand operated ones over the Scotty. For electric downriggers Scotty is the only one to have.

I just bought a pair of Cannon Mag 20 DT/HS downriggers, ok I didn't buy them I have been giving my wife a bad time about not having downriggers on my boat, and I came home from work and found them in the livingroom. Christmas in April right! I just wanted to know what does Scotty have that Cannon doesn't. The reason my wife bought these for me is my dad has them on his boat and they work great. Just wondering I have never used Scotty downriggers.

I have Cannons including a HS model. The Scotty's used to be faster, but not any more. The HS Cannons are faster than the Scotty's. The Cannons have auto-stop at the water surface, the Scotty's rely on inline beads. I have used both and prefer Cannon's. If you have the swivel bases you are good to go. This is basically a Ford vs. Chevy debate. Most die hard Scotty fans don't realize that the new Cannons are so much better than before. If "handoff" is looking at manual downriggers, "Keta" is correct that Cannon manuals are superior.

Never used a scotty electric but I just bought my 2nd cannon hs electric downrigger and fish on bend is right on, the auto stop works perfect and thay are really fast. I can't believe it took me 4 years to get my first electric downrigger. It only took 1 month to buy the 2nd one......

The Cannon hand opperated downriggers on my friends boat can be operated with one hand, the Scotties really take two to drop down. Both are well built. Scotty electrics are as saltwater resistant as I've ever seen and are easier to operate than the other manufactures of electric downriggers. When mine were purchased they had the highest horsepower motors.

Re: down rigger
I don't know why I'm repeating this, its been on multiple threads on Ifish in the past, but there is also the issue of clutches. The Cannon clutches are set up much like the drag on a reel. Easy to change the tension by turning a knob. The Scotty's have to be disassembled to change the clutch tension. If you hang a ball on the bottom this could be a problem.
Enjoy your downriggers all, I never take mine out of the boat. Can't even imagine fishing without them.

I just went with what my dad has. He’s always bought the best of the best when it comes to fishing and hunting. I don’t have them on my boat yet so I wasn’t sure if I should stick with Cannon. I guess I should just trust the old man he’s normally right on. Thanks for the info.

Re: down rigger
I have both Cannon and Scotty electric downriggers on my boat. Both work well; each has it's advantages and disadvantages. The Scotty is much faster up and down but will not go down with weights less than 8lb; the Cannon powers down as well as up and will work with 4lb weights. The 4lb weights can save battery power when fishing fairly shallow. The Cannon has the auto stop at surface function which I like but have had no problems with the Scotty stop beads. If you use a seperate battery with the Cannon make sure it is properly grounded (ground needs to be in contact with the water through motor or hull); if not properly grounded the auto stop will be eratic or not work at all. The Scotty's fast down can become a problem with some riggs such as stacking; you must controll the down speed manually. My wife prefers the Cannon as there is less to think about; I think both are great downriggers.

Re: down rigger
No one is talking about this but the Cannon Mag 20DT/HS has an adjustable Positive Ion Control in it. My Dad checks and adjusts it on every time he goes fishing, I was told this can attract fish toward your boat. You can also link and control your downriggers from a Humminbird fish finder. I have a Furuno on my boat but I was wondering has anyone used the Humminbird link system with the Mag 20DT/HS downrigger?
Hey does anyone know is there a Web site that you can get what the Positive Ion level should be for what lake you are fishing in Oregon?

Re: down rigger
It does not work in most fresh water due to poor conductivity. They do work in saltwater and possibly in some of the lakes in SE Oregon that are mineral rich.

Re: down rigger
My dad has a mag 20 with a Humminbird it seems to work pretty well. I have a Furuno and Digi-trolls and am much happier with my set-up. The biggest problem for me with the Cannonlink is that you are adjusting your rigger from the fishfinder so you either need to have somebody else back adjusting your rod or a loose drag when going down and then just allow slack when coming up and go back to fix it after you have made the adjustment at the fish-finder. I also would never trade a Furuno in for a Humminbird you might be able to run them side by side if you had a 455 or 83 khz ducer on the bird (assuming that the Furuno is a 50/200). As far as Positive Ion control settings are concerned, they are theoretically fish specific, I believe that kokanee are supposedly attracted by .6 but it is a pretty narrow field around the rigger line so if you are using more than 5-10' set-backs there should not be any significant advantage or disadvantage.

I have 2 of the 1060's for the 14 ft.'er. You definitely want the 2ft. per/turn spools!

Re: down rigger
Im still using gramps old salmon pole with the old penn coffee grinder reel with spray painted line for fine depth control. I cut the pole off at the base and stick it in a pole holder and drop it down with a halibutt weight-Nothing but the best.

Don't tell my wife you can catch fish using that set up! She would make me sell my stuff. She still says, "Wouldn't it me cheaper to buy the fish"! Let's keep this on the Down Low! I really like my downriggers and TR-1.
