Default hunter/salmon fisher with bass question...

i spend most of my time in the woods or on the river (rogue). my son is 6 and my daughter is 4, so last year started to target the large mouth bass alot more. i managed to get permision on a dynomite private pond. i was just wondering when i should start taking the rug rats to the pond.

it was real warnm for a for a week or so, then started snowing and blowing here in southern,or.

what types of baits should i use this early.

we killed them late in the year on rubber worms, minnows and anything top water. it was a blast.

thanks for the help.

Thumbs up Re: hunter/salmon fisher with bass question...

For the rug rats I would wait until you know the bite is good. Until the water warms up the bite is slow and you have to fish slow and be observant.

Good job taking your children!

Good for you!

If it's a small pond, the water will warm faster (obviously). Next time a full moon comes around, take a look in the shallows and see if you can find some big sows sitting on beds, it would be neat for the kids to see.

What worked for me when my kids were young were just a plain old weightless, texas rigged senco. They could throw them a mile and they are virtually weedles. There is absolutely no wrong way to fish it and big fish love them. I'm sure you could take them out now and still catch some fish with them. It would really be a matter of how long to let it sit after you throw it. This time of year I like to throw them out and let them sit for a minute up to three or four minutes before I even start to move it. Many times ive had them pick it up after well over a minute. Me personally I like to reel them as slow as humanly possible to where I can feel everything it touches. As the season goes on you won't have to wait so long but that's where I would start. Good luck!
