Default dory fishing

I live in ocean shores wa. I currenly have a 24 foot bayliner I fish out in the ocean. I am think of ditching her and getting a new ride.
Thinking about going the dory route, beings I maily just use her to get crabs. If any of you out there have had dories please give me the pro's and cons of them. I'm think of getting a wood fiberglass comp build up 24' long with a 100 ponies to make her move. Am I crazy? Don't answer that.

Thanks matt

I don't own a Dory but have fished out of several off the beach here in Pacific City. In my opinion they make a great fishing boat. An average sport dory around here seems to be around 22' with a 70 horse outboard. Lots of people run 40-50 miles offshore chasing tuna with that setup without any trouble.

The main drawback I see is the maintenance involved in a wood/fiberglass boat. Personally if I was going to have one built I would lean toward aluminum since its really not much more expensive and would last forever. The only drawback to aluminum is they won't slide up on the beach like glass boats will.

Do people launch dories thru the surf up there?

Thanks for the info Joe. I have never seen anyone launch from the beach up here, but I'm sure it can be done. Do you have any idea how fast those dories can go with a 70 horse.

Thanks agian

HumpTime: Run down to your local newstand and find a copy of Wooden Boat Magazine. There is an article this month on Pacific City Dories and a family that has built them (wood) for over 60 years. Read it last night, pretty good background. Might give you some names to start with, etc.

Im not sure but I think the top speed w/ a 70 horse is about 30 mph. I have a good friend who has an inboard Volvo and he says he has trouble keeping up with outboard boats on tuna trips due to there lite weight.
That article may be about my neighnors. The father and son have built over 50 wooden dories in their barn.
