My 175 SportJet is too LOUD!!!!
I have a 20’ Weldcraft with a 175SJ. I love my boat but my wife hates it because it is so loud.
I was thinking of insolating the motor some how in order to reduce the noise. Has anyone had any luck in making the SJ a little quieter?
I was thinking of wrapping the inside of the motor housing with some kink of sound board or sound dampening material.
Please I’m going def and my wife hates my boat. I have had my boat up for sale but if I can make it more pleasant im going to keep it.
Thank you
LL

What? Can you speak up? I've never seen a SJ box without sound deadening material. The one I had used a foam material about 1" thick.
Was aluminum/foil(flame/heat resistant) on one side and peel & stick on the other. Mine was a windshield model and was still real loud with the top on and no drop curtain.

My Intruder has insulation with a foil backing in the doghouse. You can hear the motor, but it isn't so loud that it causes a problem. Even with the noise, I wouldn't trade it. I love the SportJet motor.

I never thought mine was loud, but I bought two rolls of the sticky back insulation they wrap ducts with. You can buy it at HD or Lowes for around 12 bucks a roll. I put two layers of that stuff then a layer of the heat shield carpet you can buy at the auto parts store. Made a noticeable difference. I was into it for about $80 or so with the contact cement and everything else.
I also cut my dog house down as it came from the factory in the same size for a v8 or a SJ. I got an additional 12in or so of deck space.
Later,
Chris

there are sound deadeners and sound barriers. You want a barrier. Check out Hamilton Jets product line

Wow I just checked out the Dynamat and Sonex stuff. They sure are proud of that stuff$$$$$$$$$$$$. I think I am going to try the insulation from HD.

Yes, with the insulation you will cut the noise in about 1/2. I bought a sheet from a R.V. place. It had the foil on one side about 3/4" thick.

Re: My 175 SportJet is too LOUD!!!!
I noticed the biggest difference using Quietcoat. I painted it behind the motor on the transom, floor and sides. I also put some up in the front in the anchor locker. I think a lot of the sound travels up under the floor to the bow. What really made a pretty big difference was painting under the swim platform. That thing really vibrates when the motor is running. Look at this thread http://www.ifish.net/board/showthread.php?p=2545039 for the before and after sound clip. It's louder than my fiberglass boat with inboard 4 cyl but I've never been in anybody else's aluminum to compare it with except a friend who had a 302 Ford with jet and it was quieter but still had an annoying sound at speed, kind of dull whine. I'm not sure you'll ever get it as quiet as a pleasure boat, the motor is like the voice coil in a speaker and the boat is like the speaker itself.

Have you considered inline baffles in your exhaust lines you would be surprised how much noise comes from your ports out the back of your boat. Did that on a sport jet I used to own worked wonders.

Re: My 175 SportJet is too LOUD!!!!
My 351W IB was way loud until I made a couple of vinyl pads for the outside of the engine cover.
I used 1/2" plywood with holes drilled and "T-nuts", like these, installed into the plywood. Urethane on both sides of wood. Then covered with closed cell foam, then covered with thick vinyl that came from our previous hot tub cover after two large dogs caved it in.
Cheap, easy, quiets the engine down a LOT and it even makes a nice soft place to sit.
They screw in from the inside of the engine cover and can be replaced very easily.

Where would you find those baffles?

The design of the 175 sportjet dumps the exhaust out below the water line and there isn't a way to add mufflers or any baffles with the design. On all of the bigger sportjets like the 200, 240, and 250 you can put mufflers inline on either the inside of the boat, or on the outside. Ketchum manufacturing makes some and so does Wolverine, maybe check with Motion Marine since they put a lot of sportjets in boats.

Dynomat is good, but there are a lot of similar products that do about as good for a LOT cheaper. I use Raamat in the cabs of my pickups and it makes a huge difference. I'll be placing an order in the next few weeks if anyone wants to tag along and save shipping.

Keep boat for self and man expeditions. Buy another bigger, plusher boat for wife expeditions. Then add sound deadening insulation and muffler to sportjet boat.

Simple solution seems to be add sound control to the wife.
