Default Smelting with Kids?

I am planning on going to the Cowlitz this afternoon with my wife and kids and wondered where is a good spot that is not a steep dangerous cliff. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I have never been there before but am planning on starting near the Kelso bridge.

I suggest that you drive along West Side Hwy (the road that runs along the Cowlitz river) and look for places to walk down to. There's plenty of river and places that will be more suitable for kids. I don't know how old your kids are but my 8 and 11 year old tried using the net once each and then decided that I should continue doing the dipping and they handle putting the smelt in the bucket. Have fun and be safe.
