Default Need Recommendation to hang a 364 Elk Head Mount in Springfield/Eugene

Hi all

I'm mostly a Salty Dog, but I like a little wild red meat now and again I killed a nice Rocky Mtn. elk a few years ago, and have a beautiful head mount. The mount is pretty striking, it is a very old bull that was just starting to regress. The rack isn't enormously wide and tall, but the mass has to be seen to be believed. It was no problem to hang in my old house, we had a 14' beam ceiling. When we moved into our current place, I had to farm out my head to Jones Elk Calls, where it graced their trophy room. Well, Jones Calls just sold their business, and I need to find a new place to hang my trophy. Any of you guys have a suggestion for me? I would like to keep it local to Springfield/Eugene where I live, so I can visit from time to time. I checked at Dick's Sporting Goods, but their wall space was full...

Thanks for your help! Here's a "pic-of-a-pic", I'll try to scan one tomorrow for a better image.

Give bowtech a call they might hang that beast in their pro shop.. rifle or bow that's a great looking bull and to not hang it in a shop because it wasn't a bull kill is a shame.

I would send it back to the taxidermist and have it remounted so it fits in your house. There are several styles that will allow it to fit in a regular 8 foot ceiling. One is a sharp turn with the nose up bugling keeping the horns very level. Talk to your taxidermist, maybe you can have it back and look at it everyday.

That would be my first consideration, funds permitted. I would be sick not having that in my OWN home if I had pulled the trigger!

Thanks for the suggestions guys, great ideas
I don't want to have it re-mounted; the current mount has great character. Besides, I already have a fine Oregon P&Y antelope, a 30" Colorado mulie and a nice Oregon P&Y black bear in my house now. Don't need any more of a menagerie!

Guess I could share a little of the story. I was hunting along the Idaho side of Hell's Canyon, with my friend Ron Goodpasture and his 4 horses. We packed in about 12 miles from the trailhead, west of Riggins. I spotted this bull opening day about 30-minutes before sunset, with a band of about 10 cows. I ran back up the ridge I was on, then over two ridges, and fast-walked down the hill to close the distance. With about 10-minutes of shooting light left, I snuggled up around a down tree using my day pack as a rest. The bull was right at 300 yards. First shot was broadside feeding, hit was just a little low, went through the center of his heart. Second shot as he ran away broke his back. Amazingly, he ran 100 yards or more like he wasn't touched! Even more amazing, as I ran up to my prize a second bull just as big took off down the hill. I was using my favorite kevlar-stocked mountain rifle in 8mm Remington Magnum, with 200 grain nosler partitions. Ron tagged a nice 5x5 the very next day. Love that wilderness hunting!

Use the current mount and place it on a pedestal like the one in Bowtech's pro shop.

I wouldn't let a bull like that out of my sight, as my late great Uncle's 380 class bull was stolen by the taxidermist a couple years ago....I vote for the pedestal stand in the corner of the room.

That is a dandy bull. Love those huge back forks (for a six). Welcome to the hunting side of the forum. Thanks for sharing, Wheels.

Thanks! Hopefully today I will post a scan of the real picture, I think everyone will like that. The pic above is a photo of a photo, which never works out too well

Do you mean more details than posted above (post #9 I think)? Here's a few details. If you want more, I'm happy to oblige, just didn't want to rattle on
  • The location was in the vicinity of Devil 2 Creek, somewhere near Horse Heaven
  • We made the traditional wilderness camp, with wall tent, etc.
  • I did quite a bit of research during the previous off season, including phone calls to rangers and game officers, to locate an area that had fewer elk but a better chance of taking a really nice bull (worked!)
  • This was Idaho, so we were able to hunt right after the rut. This big boy had been busy; not an ounce of fat! Great looker, not such a great eater
  • My 8mm Remington Magnum spits out the 200 Noslers at 3080 fps, measured on two different chronographs. Out of about 10 elk taken with this rifle, this bull was the only animal to go more than 10 yards after the hit
Good luck to you all on your Big Bull Adventures!

Thanks again for the feedback guys! Here's a better photo. BTW I'm not a little guy; 6'0" 180#; it's just a nice elk!

There is a ODFW or some sort of Gov building close to Oak Ridge where you get disabled parking permits, you might give them a call or a local F&G / forestry offices down there. I would think any of them that have room would like to hang it for you so others could enjoy it also.

Tried Bowtec today, no love. They are overflowing with elk heads, although none as nice as mine (I'm biased!). I'll check in with Bi-Mart this evening on my way home.

Bi-Mart was also a no-go. May have some interest from Gun Pro Shooting Supplies out on 4405 Main Street in Springfield. Any more suggestions? Anyone???

West 11th Archery in Eugene might hang it for you. Its kind of a small hole in the wall place, but as a last resort it could be an option. Its a nice bow shop. Maybe even the Barrons Den next to I5 up near LCC.

They are rebuilding the ranger station offices up here in McKenzie Bridge what about calling and seeing if once they are done they would like it hung up there?

The one I shop at is just north of McKenzie/Willamette Hospital, behind the Taco Bell. That is the one I checked at. No heads hanging, and their manager told me they had no room...
