Question T8 Yamaha shift problem

I replaced the water pump on my T8 and now I can't get it to shift into reverse. I have adjusted the shift linkage 100% both ways as far as it will go.Am I missing something when I put the lower unit back on? It runs great the water pump works well I just can't find reverse anymore. Help please

Something in the shift linkage isn't lined up right.

You didnt time the rods right when you screwed the coupler back on.

Drop it into reverse and unscrew the coupler up onto the upper shift shaft.
Shift it back into forward at the shift handle.
Pull the shifter rod that goes to the l/u back up into neutral.
Now using the shift handle.... put it in neutral and screw the coupler back onto the lower shift shaft .
The coupler should have the shafts threaded in equal distances.
Check shift operation and tighten the lock nut.

Thanks Stickfish and Smalldog. I have the Seloc manual and can't find this information in it. This should solve my problem.

Once you get the shift shaft adjusted correctly mark the shift rod at the connector with a large drop of white paint. Next time you just screw them together to where the paint lines up.
