Re: whats the best lure for columbia smallies
splitshot or carolina rigged zoom lizzards, and dry creek tubes are tough to beat. green pumpkins, and watermelon colors.

Tube jigs are great. A jig and pig combo is hard to beat.

A tubes a tube until you get down to details....but dry creek has the best smallie colors...in my opinion. by double dipping the head, or entire body of the bait, they achieve the "coreshot" color effect, or two toned look, some of which are deadly on the river.

Re: whats the best lure for columbia smallies
I'm no smallie expert by any means, but if all you chose to use for smallies were tubes and jigs, you'd probably hook your share of fish.

Dont get me wrong, I am a firm believer in soft plastics too, but I love chunking crank baits, spinner baits and an occasional deep diving rap.

Re: whats the best lure for columbia smallies
We've been throwing swimbaits on the Columbia with some awesome results. Been using the ones from www.smackbait.com Catching more on those than any other kind. I'll attach a pic of Marc Ladyga's fish from our Columbia River trip of a couple of weekends ago. Huge smallie! JB

Dry Creeks butt ugly tube works good for me. Any lipless cranks with black top and silver side works well too

Re: whats the best lure for columbia smallies
I''ve compared lures on a few occasions when the fish were really biting, and a 3.5 in. green tube outfished the others. My other choice would be a 3/8 oz. lipless crank in craw, or a 1/2 oz. one in chrome.

Re: whats the best lure for columbia smallies
I love the lipless cranks but I had to put it away one spring day during the spawn. I was fishing with a buddy and he had on a spinner bait. We were fishing about 3-4' deep in a back water area. He caught a fish so I threw in behind him with no results. He threw back in the same spot and caught another. I threw back in and nada. He threw back in and came up with another one. I'm pretty thick-headed sometimes but that was enough. I switched and it was game on the rest of the day.

WIERD looking vegatation in that spot!!! Good lookin' bait though!!!
Another vote for a lipless crank to search and a tube to destroy.
I guess I'll have to throw some spinner baits too this year, as soon as I'm done with this springer bug
