Default Intro

Hey - -

Id'er here. I'm getting back into fishing after a long hiatus - college/jobs/relocation. But now I'm back in Oregon and the urge has been rekindled. Last year I tried to land my first springer but, like many, gave up due to heavy vegetation in the Willamette.

For salmon and steelhead I have a pretty limited area that I fish. My father-in-law, a farmer, has land that borders about a mile of the Willamette. Basically, no crowds...just locals. It's pretty good water up here...lots of slots, holes and riffles.

There have been lots of local reports on some pretty hot steelhead (natives) fishing up here, especially around Windsor Island (north of Salem). Most people are plunking, hoping to pick up a hatchery fish or an early springer. I've never plunked but would like to try it out. (Any tips would be appreciated.)

Anyway, this looks like a good board. I'm pretty unexperienced with the steelhead/salmon scene.....but I'll be lurking.

Welcome to the board. Great place to fish when you can't. I've been hearing rumors of good native steelie fishing up there, but the exact location is a well kept secret. I'm after springers myself almost exclusivly for the next few months. Bet our higher water conditions will treat you better this year.

Aint it great to finally get your career in order so you can start to concentrate on the important things again! What's your handle Id'r about?

Thanks for the welcome! Hopefully I can contribute something....

FishHunter - I couldn't really think of anything so I just shortened my job title... 'industrial designer'.

BTW...just got home from fishing the Willamette...first time out. A few people out there said they've been hooking native steelies. No springers yet. (that would be too early up here?) Anyway, I used the 'search' function on this site to find discussions on plunking for steelies and came up with some good research that I applied today.

I've got a few questions...#2 spin/glos and 2/0 hooks seem pretty big considering the clarity and river level (somewhat low)....and a #10 kwikfish seems wayyy too big too. People are fishing in 5-8 ft up here. I haven't been able to snoop too much but are these sizes a little on the large size? (Keep in mind that I recently came over from the trout/bass camp and everything seems oversize.....) Thanks!
