Default tuna flies

Getting ready to order hooks and tying stuff to tie up some flies for albacore and maybe some smaller ones for rockfish , just to get some practice . Any body have a favorite go to albacore fly , if you could post me up a pic or two I would be very grateful . Most of the flies i see are for the carribean sea . I was leaning to super hair in white ,pink and blue and stick on eyes thanks

this was my money fly last year:

and then the rest...

most tied by me, with a couple of exceptions...

all on 3/0, although 4/0 would work just fine as well...
lots of flash with blue super hair (I think that's what that stuff was called) on top, white underneath, a little red for the throat, a bit of deer tail to give a little bulk, stick on eyes coated with epoxy (I used the 5 min. variety).

oh, stay away from rabbit strips, too much of a pain to cast (if you're faced with a situation where you're actually casting)...

for me, next year (this summer), a couple of topwater flies are going with me...

Kind of what I had in mind , nice to see made up . I ordered some Diacchi salt water hooks in 2/0 and 4/0 . Just curious , have you tried pink and white , I've had such good luck pulling zukers in that color i was going to try it

no, last summer was the first time I'd fished for them...the blue & white is pretty typical of the bait species present out there...

Fished all of these, but the top center fly did best last year. Bigger isn't necessarily better, but lots of flash is good. I'm going to use more flashabou and krystal flash and less hair in my patterns this year. Tube flies might be a good way to go also for short strikes. We were trollling and I felt a slight "tug." Thinking I had picked up some seaweed, I started stripping in to check the fly. Got about ten feet of line in (with the fly fully waking on the surface) before it disappeared in a boil and I was hooked up.

How fast are you trolling your flies , I was thinking of doing that close to the boat with a 10" spreader bar and arubber band release

Just a wild guess, but I'd say somewhere around 5 knots?...

Might be worthwhile to try. Our charter captain's partner was running another boat commercially the day we were out trolling in the same area. If I remember right, he was dragging clones/feathers and think we outfished him with flies.

Why don't you just hold the rod and let the fly line out? A standard bluewater line is about 100 feet...just keep 1 turn of line on the reel, so you are not setting against the backing knot.

Packer,

I'll post a few of my favorites soon. I loaned out my tuna box to a friend that wanted to take some pics. I'll try to post them before leaving for BAJA next week. If you don't see them by mid-week...shoot me a PM and remind me.
