Yes, right now it is. All USN ships are still on high alert for terrorism, regardless of where they are.

Re: Armed Gaurd on Navy ship..
Snapshot & I also had that expeirence. Ray said he remembers someone getting their line tangled in a rope near one of the boats. Perhaps that's why? They are guarding the same two boats that were there last year. No guards then. It is pretty disconcerting having guys yell at you with military garb & M-16's on your day off. Steer clear!

Re: Armed Gaurd on Navy ship..
Not Surprised. With all of the new Homeland Security enactments following 911 this is now commonplace.
Remember the USS Cole....the Navy is real touchy about any boats getting too close.
I can't say I blame them but it is unnerving when it is you they are flexing thier muscle towards.

Re: Armed Gaurd on Navy ship..
I wasnt really that close and the Coast guard is right around the corner, would think they would call coast guard for backup..

We've seen the same thing. Kinda spooky going by and having 3 m-16's following you!! We weren't very close either!!

Re: Armed Gaurd on Navy ship..
The current security zone around Navy ships calls for civilian vessels to approach no closer than 100 yards and to use minimum speed within 500 yards.

Re: Armed Gaurd on Navy ship..
Last summer I took family inside Swain island to look at ships in dry dock and look at the PT 658. There's a twin hull catamaran spy ship docked across from it. There where several guards with mp5's standing on the look out. The men in black with their Helicopters.

Re: Armed Gaurd on Navy ship..
that'll teach us to fish in our waters. i understand where they are coming from. i have two brothers in the national guard. one is leaving to kuwait soon. so homeland security is very important because you can never tell who is dangreous or not.

Re: Armed Gaurd on Navy ship..
We had to pull anchor because we were to close. I know it is 100 yards but it appears that I need to go get my eyes re calibrated  I think it was over 100 yards, but my fishing buddies and the coast guard (who was very nice by the way) said it was less than. I need to get my eyes checked No problem following the rules here.

sturg42> they are not just standing a post. my bet is that if thay wanted to they can knock out your marker lights at 300 yd. standard range for MARINES is 500 yds just to have the privlage to protect you and yours. give them the room they ask for and be happy to have them on your side. I AM

Even up here, the Navy & CG are alert, armed and ready. Just stay clear, and no problemo. It is after all, part of what they do.

Re: Armed Gaurd on Navy ship..
sturgeon 42. Nice to meet you out there. We put some fish in the boat, but no keepers. It was a recon trip for the derby anyway. I took your advice and stayed away from the ship.
Hope you did well.

Re: Armed Gaurd on Navy ship..
I'll tell you what's eerie - we went to Israel a few years ago. Mandatory service in armed forces for all - Saturday nights on the boardwalk, during which some of the IDF kids were on 24-hour leave. They can leave alright, they just have to take their guns with them. So here are a couple hundred 17 to 20 year-old people, hangin' out, with their guns over their shoulders. Most were in their civies, but they are required to keep their weapon with them at all times. If they get separated from their gun, it most likely means jail time.

Re: Armed Gaurd on Navy ship..
I echo what OregonRedSide says, however if the guard is a Navy Guard you should be safe  but if he is a Marine or even better yet AIRBORNE INFANTRY they could pick off your guides one by one while your trolling at 500 meters with a cross wind (all in jest of course)All who serve or have served deserve all of our gratitude and thanks...

Re: Armed Gaurd on Navy ship..
Thanks for the heads-up John! Now we have to watch out for the barges, sealions, gillnetters, other boaters, stuff falling off the St. John's bridge and M-16's. Whew! Be alert people, and don't drink and boat.

They are just doing their job.
Next time you pass by you should salute them and tell them thanks.
Because they are their we are safe.

Re: Armed Gaurd on Navy ship..
my older brother and i had the same thing happen to us in the swan island area last year as we were bass fishing. armed guards standing over us, with a sheriff escort showing us the route in so we didn't get shot. i'm glad they are there, but i wish they would go somewhere else for a couple of weeks so we can bass fish the area when the water gets warmer. it should be real good once they are gone.

On a US NAVY ship the M-16 is the last weapon I would worry about.

Re: Armed Gaurd on Navy ship..
Gosh, I'm around these armed watch standers every time I go shopping at PSNS. For me it's a feeling of comfort knowing they are alert and prepared. I like having them around.
