Boats... For better or worse, For richer or poorer, through good times and bad...
What IS it about boats?
It nearly broke my heart to hear a friend tell me that when his boat was towed away by the new owner, that he watched it go down the road until he could no longer see it.
:depressed:
I hurt for him, man! I could relate!
Even though the only boat I ever had was a dinky little wooden skiff, I have extremely fond memories of it. It was MY boat.
It's almost embarrassing, but sometimes I think I miss my old boat more than I do old boyfriends!
It's the times you spend together. What you put into it. Your friends, your life, your time, the fish! It's what you see when you are out there. The good times, the bad times... The memories stand out so clearly to me! Every single time I took the boat out!
So, tell me... What is this thing about boats???
It never occurred to me until now. Boats are near and dear to my heart. Not because of their brand, or their color, or how fancy they are, or anything else... Just because they have shared my time, and my most important times, at that.
Isn't it strange? Or is it?
What boat do you miss most? What was your hardest boat to sell?
Even if you are upgrading boats, is it still hard to let them go? I would think, yes.
Are you more close to your drift boats or your sleds?
This seems like a silly topic, but to me it's real.
I can remember every boats personality. I'm losin it, right?

Boats are hard to sell because they are memories themselves and they create memories. My two favorite: My first of course the Leke Teke was a wooden pram that yes indeed leaked...it was wooden, fiberglass, metal, caulk, twine...hmm other stuff I am sure...on its first duck trip I was setting out decoys and had a flock of Bluebills come in...first shot went off a bit early and put a nice 12ga hole in her stern. The second was the wooden drift boat that I built in high school...I still think that boat was the best ever! Both boats were sold to go to college....but the leke teke was sold to my best bud who in memory still has her!
Fun one Jen!
Memories are flooding in!!

Boats are a funny thing. I guess it’s something about freedom and the fact that you work so hard to get one. It’s an extension of the person, it’s more than a tool, it’s a trusted companion.
If your lucky you may get to custom order one to your specs and your style of fishing, your “ultimate” boat. This would mean you’ve had a few others along the way and this is the culmination of all the good and bad of past boats. A serious fisher will probably spend more time in it than a car or truck. I do. Heck, there are some days I spend more time in my boat than I do in my house!
I can only imagine what it was like to watch it head down the road. :depressed: I have my own “ultimate” boat. Had two others along the way. I don’t know what I’d do if I had to let her go.
It’s weird that people would become so attached to an object but it’s not just any ol’ thing you can have or buy.
It’s a boat!

Re: Boats... For better or worse, For richer or poorer, through good times and bad...
When I bought my sled, people asked me "Are you going to sell your drift boat?" It always seemed like a bizarre question. "Sell my drift boat?", I think to myself. Why would I do that? The Willie that put me into a 49 pound King on it's very first trip? Sell it? NO WAY!
I have so much fun in my boats. They take me on fantastic adventures, keep me safe and dry, provide a home away from home for entertaining friends, building new friendships and cementing old ones.
What is it? I can't put my finger on it. It's physical, emotional and intellectual all at once.

Just let my driftboat go to another IFISH member. The good news is the new owner is one very happy camper and destined for lots of fish in it. Keeping my old man boat Asaltor though, always.

I can relate, when I sold my old driftboat and the guy drove off with it , it felt like I was a teenager again and just saw my ex-girlfriend kissing another guy! :depressed:

A boat is a hole in the water that you dump money into! However life is not complete unless one has at least one boat and preferably five.

Raised Two dogs and had way to many memories in my Willie Driftboat. Took it all over Oregon and then some. Drifted for 13 years in it! The worst memory I had was selling it for the sled. I will drift again one day!

Life would be very dry without a boat.
