Aw shucks Jim

Thanks! It has always been my motto that anglers are an important resource to my job. I rely a lot on the information I get back from them, so I like to repay the favor!

Stacie,
After talking with Ken from the Ringold hatchery,
He says that wdfw is putting a lot of emphasis on catfish in their warm water hatchery. He said that the public had spoken. Who would want cats over spiny rays? Another thing, why is this state so infactuated with trout? We would really have a great spiny ray state if wdfw would have concentrated more money towards them. 600,000 saugeye planted in Liberty lake. What is up with that? Why introduce Nebraska crappies in so few lakes? I have too many questions!

Hi Fear No Fish!

First, there is no such thing as too many questions!

Next, Ken is a GREAT guy!! When he talks warmwater anglers listen! Yes, there is an emphasis on channels, but not really any more than tiger muskies or walleye.

Channels just offer a different type of fishery. With all the regulations on salmon, steelhead and sturgeon, many people are turning toward resident fishing opportunities.

A big focus has been warmwater fish, which is why we had the enhancement license a couple of years ago. We have a great warmwater program specifically dedicated to the warmwater resources of Washington.

Trout are very popular with anglers, and I think will always be. So, with that in mind we try to offer the best opportunities for them as well. We some really excellent trout fishing opportunities, especially in southwest Washington where we have everything from rainbows to goldens to tiger trout.

The thing with spiny's is they are introduced and we do have a lot of native fish populations as well as amphibians that we have the responsibility to protect. There could be a lot more opportunity if we ignored our native species - but we don't want to do that.

So we try to provide alternative fisheries in waters that we can. A lot of times the actual waters dictate what we can plant. Some waters are good for bass and not for trout - some are great for channels and not for bass and so on.

Hope that answers some of your questions, if not, please do not hesitate to let me know!

Default Hello!

I just found this board through some of my angler friends.

My name is Stacie Kelsey. I work for Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife in Region 5 which is the six southwestern counties in Washington. I work within the Inland Fish Program where I deal mostly with residential fish (trout, warmwater fish and grass carp). Although resident fish are my specialty I have a lot of access and contacts for other species info.

I am here to provide any assistance with fishing and fish resources in Washington. If I don't have the answer I know where to get it!

I hope to be of help.

Stacey Kelsey...it is great to see your name grace this board! You will like everyone on this board I think and you will probably love Jennie, Jennie...this is Stacey one of the best WDFW employees in the state and a great communicator!!

She is also the person who wins the award for the most attempts at a day of fishing with me....

You are welcome Stace!

Thank you for the offer, could you provide specific information regarding WDFW new policy to determine hatchery mitigation success by the number of adult spawners produced rather than the old policy of smolts released? How long has WDFW been working on this?

An independent group of 9 scientists devised a “blueprint” for this new policy, could you provide it electronically?

Thanks

*** Clerk

P.S. Nice picture:

Wow. That is a heck of a first question!

But I love a challenge.

I am working on your question and will post an answer as soon as I get it.
