rod storage at home
Wondering what is the best way to store rods at home, i.e. least expensive and most useful for me and the rods? Already did a search on ifish, some info. but looking for more. Also have already looked at Cabelas and other like mags. Any input would be appreciated.

Re: rod storage at home
Doesn't everyone have a "Rod Room"
Now a serious thought... you can buy the rod holders from Berkley (like the ones in boats) for about $12... they hold 6 rods.. that's what I would recommend. Easy, keeps them safe??
I guess.
I know a guy (Brad chime in at any time) that keeps his rods on top of his wife's canopy bed frame.. he is my hero! waking up every morning to the sight of fishing rods.. wow.. what a life.

Re: rod storage at home
If you have a garage and an empty ceiling in it.
Build a frame or use plywood, hinge it at one end and a couple pulleys/rope at the other. Out of sight and out of danger. Divide it into salmon/steelhead, bass, trout, sturgeon areas.

Re: rod storage at home
I built a rod rack about a year ago. 30" diameter on a lazy suzan and holds thirty rods. I think the total cost was around $50. The only drawback was that my wife finally knew just how many rods I had. When I put all my rods in it I had three slots left open. I explained that one was hers and the boys had two. That didn't help. I can send pictures if interested.

Re: rod storage at home
I made a rod rack that will hold 20 rods with reels in an upright position. It is about 4 feet long and holds 10 rods on each side. It took less that 1/2 a sheet of plywood, a piece of felt tape, and about 1 hour. Just go look at some of the rod racks at some of the tackle shops for ideas. I wish I had made a template. I need to build another one.

Re: rod storage at home
I saw a rod rack system at the sportsman show that attached to a wall. It was round and I think it rotated. Dont know the name or price....I just have 2 sets of Berkley rod holders screwed into my garage wall. There cheap and easy to put up. Holds 6 per set.

Re: rod storage at home
I scored two rod display racks that rotate. They are full. I need a third one for the rods I am getting soon.
(Never enough sticks!) TH, have you seen the new glo in the dark thread that is 10 times brighter and lasts 15 times longer in light duration? I would like a rod with that kind of thread on the last three guides. It would make a killer night fishing pole. I go through so darn many of the light sticks that this would be way more cost effective. They also have stickers that glo just as long. Maybe wrap the rod for the last foot with that with a gloss finish. What do you think?

Re: rod storage at home
C.A.O., I have looked at some of the storage racks for sale in Cabellos and decided to use some 1/2" pvc pipe as a base for the rod butts and an inexpensive rod rack made for six rods on the top side. Since the top and bottom was made the same way,(in the bought one) I end up with a 12 rod holder. I am hanging the pvc pipe down close to the floor and the bought rack, about 2/3's of the way up the wall to secure the upper part of the rods. It seems to work okay. The only problem is with the 9' rods. They don't fit that particular spot in the barge. Overall it turned out pretty good and I'm in it less than $15.00 for everthing, including the screws. If it saves one rod or rod tip, it's worth the half hour it took me to construct. It won't be in any home fashion magazines thought. Perhaps with a more creative mind and some skill, it could be one for Home and Garden. Good Luck

Re: rod storage at home
I have four legged animals running around my house and I didn't want my rods turned into chew toys so I bought a bunch of the big yellow vinyl covered hooks and anchored them into my ceiling in my garage. That way the rods are up and safe from the critters. Works great and I don't have to worry about them.

Re: rod storage at home
Cheap: Nails into the studs in the wall of the garage. Store your rods horizontally on the nails.
Less Cheap: Same method using the plastic coated hooks available from a hardware store.

Re: rod storage at home
I purchased a horizontally mounted rotating storage system at the sportmans show. Its called a "Rod & Reel Storage Ace". You can mount it on the wall or from the ceiling. It holds 12 rods with reels. It cost $60, but its a pretty nice system. I'm sure most of you could make one alot cheaper. I haven' checked out their website, but here is the address, www.rod-reelstorageace.com

Re: rod storage at home
I'm in the process of finishing up my Rod Holding system.. .should finish it tonight. Bought 3 sets of the berkley holders at Fishermans $9.99 each i beleive. took a sheet of ply wood, cut out a 2 peices in flat top triangle shape to hold 3 rows of six.. w/ a long flat side to attach to support on the wall.
All said and done I have a 18 holder which mounts verticaly on the wall taking aproximatly 26 inches of wall space... and you can store reels etc. on the ply wood shelf the holders are attached to.
*Note: I saw the rotating holder at the sportsman show... Its a nice setup.... I'd recomend it.. I like building things or I would have bought one. I have the number at home if you'd like it. Just email me .. hpotter@gocougs.wsu.edu

Re: rod storage at home
The guy selling the Rotating system also said it can be mounted verticaly w/ some simple adjustments... He's in Tigard.

Re: rod storage at home
How about a series of vinyl-coated "cup holder" hooks mounted 6-8" apart on a 2x4 screwed to the wall (closer if reels aren't attached) and hang them by the tips? This avoids any "set" which can occur if the rods are laid horizontally.

Re: rod storage at home
Kaus, sounds like you have the same thing I did. I enclosed mine in some cheap left over panelling I had laying around to keep all my wood working dust off them, but I have the hinges, the pulleys, etc. Works good, but I have to move the car to get them down :depressed: . I've actually been keeping the two rods I use the most on the wall where they are easier to get to. Thinking about removing the panelling so I can lift them out easier. I definitely like having them attached to the ceiling where I can't lean anything up against them.
I took some pictures, if I ever get them scanned I'll post them. It ain't perty, but it works.

Re: rod storage at home
My husband made mine. He took two, 2X8X8, and cut a large hole, than a L-shape next to it. and just oppitsate the other side. Than he nailed them to the trusses in the garage, and they hang on them above my head. It works great and becomes a very nice display of rods.

Re: rod storage at home
I finished mine up yesterday. The only expense was for the Berkley holders (30 bucks for 3) .... and of course a little time and creativity, and some spare wood laying around. Turned out great and actually provided some additional storage for reels, spools, etc....
Although.......I do have a few slots w/ out rods in them... perhaps the reel expense comes when I buy new stuff to fill them!

Re: rod storage at home
These are all great ideas. Here is my storage solution. 1st get a piece of plywood about 18" wide and how ever long you want it ( i just bought a shelf that was already cut out it's about 6' long). 2nd get a few pieces of conduit 1 1/4" in diameter any kind will work.3Rd get some 2 hole pipe straps, and cut the pipe into 12" lenghts and strap them to the plywood. Space however far apart you want them.Last get some shelf brackets and mount as far up as you can reach. This works great because it keeps your rods out of harms way in the garage. If you want you can mount another board on top and still use it as a shelf also.(great for keeping reel boxes and wader shoes on ). Just an idea!!

Re: rod storage at home
I've tried the berkley (still use one forr my trout rods to keep them out of the way) but what I did is buy the rod racks you see at sporting goods stores (these are the ons you see at Sportco). They hold 14 flyrods and about 8-10 (maybe full 14 depending on what you load into the racks) baitcasting/spinning. I have one that says lamiglass and the other two are generic daanielsons. They hook into pgboards. They are vertical mounts, thant run perpendicular to the wall. They stick out a bit, but don't take up as much wall space. ou can buy them at Sportco for about $10. The lami's cost a bit more and hold less rods. I just sold off a ton of rods, and finally am down to 2 rod holders (had 4 rod holders and misc rods strewn everywhere). If any of you have ben in Tilamook Sporting Goods, I do believe they use the same rackss (I think, have onlly been in it once). My rods are off the ground and ready to be puulled off the rack and taken fishiing. They have rubber clasps tha keep the rod from beinn marked up.
