Yamaha T8 Tiller to Remote Conversion

Anybody have a T8 that had the tiller handle and convert it to a remote control (remote steering/remote throttle)?

How much did it cost and how big of a job was it to do?

FYI if you convert to a Garmin TR-1 remote steering & Throttle you do not lose the ability to run your Yammi as a manual Tiller also.

TR1 is 4 hour job to install & water test. I thought it was around $1500 for mine a couple years ago. Love it ! Use it every trip.

Do a search for TR1 you will get many opinions.

My TR1 took more like a full day but I'm a bit anal when it comes to routing wires and connections. Make sure the tension lever under the motor is full loose when you run the remote. Mine was about $1500.00 4 or 5 years ago but think they're more like $2200.00 now. Mine is the cord model.

Got my TR-1 corded version last year - reconditioned unit - from Robert Voss of Marine Technical Experts (ifish sponser), installed for about $1200 and love it on my Yamaha F8. I would highly recommend Robert if he has what you're looking for .

I started thinking about going with the remote steering after I broke the handle on my T8. Now I'm thinking I might want to stay with the tiller handle - I guess I'll just buy a new one.

Don't suppose anybody that did convert their tiller handle to the remote has a perfectly good tiller handle laying around that they'd be willing to sell?

There is a guy that sells them on craigslist. Don't know if they are a good deal or not though...

By the way while doing research on what i needed to buy in order to set up my 75 Yamaha i came across someone looking to convert to remote throttle for a T8 and steering was done by EZ Steer. The controls are 250 on the cheapest site I could find...wiring harness $68 control cables $55. Troll master throttle seams like it would be the way to go when you consider price...

I think you made a good choice stick with replacing you tiller handle.

The guy on craigslist is selling the whole handle only. I can buy the grip piece (the part I broke) at a local marine shop for about $100..

Very easy to do....yamaha makes the kits. They make a tie bar the go from the main to the kicker as well.
