Default sand/water filter

BD ..OK so I fouled up and forgot to drain my Groco water filter over the winter. Yep and the plastic (sight glass) cracked and made a mess when I started it up. Well I wanted to fish so I bought a hose "3/4" splicer" from NAPA and joined the inlet and outlet hoses. After pumping out my bilge everything was OK. Here's the question, do I really need the seporator or can I just leave it by-passed like it is now. I've had my boat 21' NW Jet foe 9 years, I ckeck the filter often and have never found anything in it. I don't run skinny water, the Bic C is my stomping ground. A new filter is expensive, replacement parts are like a month away and just the plastic is like $75 shipped from Groco. What do you advise BD ?

I'd be leary to run without a filter at all. Can you retrofit to another style of filter at a lesser price?

The sand filter is just that. To filter the sand and gravel and keep it out of the cooling system. If you're not using in skinny water then there would be no real need. Just make sure your repair is done right. You know Murphy's law.

Seriously, most jets do not run a sand filter, and since you have not seen much sand your are probably OK to bypass it. The sand (if any) will plug your heat exchanger over time, which leads to over-heating....so that's the risk.
