Default Honda Kicker Throttle Lock Fix

Anyone that has a newer Honda kicker knows how badly the throttle lock mechanism works. It is supposed to rotate clock ways to lock the throttle from snapping back to the idle position. Well it doesn't work very well.

I found a way to fix it.
Simply wrap two zip ties around the lock collar and tighten them as tight as you can without breaking them. Cut the remaining zip tie off with a sharp knife or razor blade to nock off all the sharp edges. Rotating one half turn will lock and unlock the throttle it is solid and work every time.

I started with, and will use as a backup a large hose clamp. I works great but it is steel and will show corrosion.

Stryker, On your new Honda kicker, take it back to Allen's marine. When we took our boat in last month for it's yearly service, Greg told Allen about our Honda Kicker throttle lock that has never worked. :depressed: Allen said, it was a factory defect and they will replace it for free. They put the new one on, and wow what a difference that made. It works great now.

Its a fairly easy fix. The new part has more contact points than the old and should be easy to find one at a Honda Dealer. Works great.

I had mine repaired at Allen Marine and it still doesn't work properly, slips all the time. Fixed the problem by installing a Trollmaster Pro, gives me a lot more flexibility and I don't have to get out from under the canvas on nasty days to change the trolling speed. Just my .02

Oh Man!!!

This is the thing I have been looking for.

http://www.troll-masterpro.com/

My wife will be soooooo happy. She usually drives the boat when we are trolling. She is always getting aggravated when the wind or current pushes the boat and she can not rev up the kicker a little to get out of trouble or just change the trolling speed.

We usually spend most of the time under the boat top out of the sun, wind and rain. We can steer the kicker fine but the throttle has always been is issue.

WOO HOO, LIV2FISH you are the man! You can put your “.02” in anytime. Thanks!

FYI: I ordered one as soon as I saw it from Cabela’s. $249.99 + $20.95 2nd day shipping = $270.94

Stryker, I think that you will be very happy with it. Make sure that you get the Trollmaster Pro and not the regular model. You have to do a phone order on it, or at least did when I ordered mine. Was very easy to install, routing the lines was the hardest part. Your wife will be very pleased with it!!

I ordered it from Cabela’s,
“TrollMaster Pro Series Remote Throttle Controls
MODEL: TM 207 PRO” for my 2003 Honda 8 HP kicker.

Thank you sooooo much. I’m not kidding when I say I have been looking for this forever. This thing fixes several problems for us.

I did a search on ifish and it didn’t find any mention of this product outside this post from us. I wonder why? Is this a new product?

ZaQ, Allen told us it was a factory defect and they fixed it for free, so if you bought it from Sportcraft, I would call them and set up a time to have it fixed. It only takes a few minutes if they have the part. They replaced the whole trottle lock. Like I say, it works great now. Our boat was off warranty too.
Liv2fish, Why don't you take it back to Allen Marine and have them fix it right  . Or did you even let them know? I would rather have the right part in it, then zip ties. And what if you sell it, would'nt it be better with the correct part. Just my thoughts!!

Gonna give em a call. I don't want to be without my motor for a week or more though. Gots to make sure they have the part before I take it in.

Now i have a problem with our honda kicker. When i turn to the right it revs up uncontrollably. While trolling the wind river or for kokanee it is a real pain. I know what the problem is i just do not know how to fix it. When you turn right the kicker handle that has the throttle cable running through it pullas away from the actaul motor ever so slightly and puts tension on the throtle cable, and it revs up. I wish i could figure a way to fix it.
