What Size Prawn To Use????
I have put some thought into making up my own died prawns and now I'm woundering what size you thing works best for Salmon  I looked at the ones that the fishing stores and they looked small to me. I think a bigger prawn would be more visable to the fish , this depending on water clarity.

Re: What Size Prawn To Use????
Since your question is about to fall off the board, I will take a stab at this for you.
I die up a couple different types of prawns to fish with.
First I die up the bait prawns which you see died either orange or pink. These are typically used this time of year for springers. I buy them frozen and they only come in one size (at least most are the same size) to the best of my knowledge. I like to pick thru and not get the ones without black heads or hollow heads. Given a choice I will choose a prawn that is bigger, but most are close to the same size.
The other type of prawn I die up are the tiger prawns you see to eat at fred meyers seafood counter. These come with no head and I usually shell these and die them. I like to fish them for steelhead, as the meat is tough and will stay on a hook.
Hope that helps.

Re: What Size Prawn To Use????
Thank you Bait O'Eggs for your input on my question. Looks like maybe everyone ealse buys theirs.
I for one don't like the quality of the ones I've seen.
:depressed:
Thanks again, Fishalot

The ones in the store already made up are about $4 and you get about 10 prawns typically which makes them $0.40 each. I can buy them at Tonys fish market in O.C. for $4.99 a pound, and I can pick thru an 11 pound box and choose the better looking bait. It works out at about $0.10 each for the prawn. The die is not very expensive. The vacumn bags are not cheap, but I can package them in quanities that I will use with minimal waste. I figure my bait cost is about 1/2 that of the store bought ones when I am all done. The prawns look better and I dont have any broken tails, or black heads. With the shortage of herring, I hope to be able to use prawns effectively this year.

Re: What Size Prawn To Use????
Bait of Eggs, are you usnig procure type stuff or Jello and some other formula you hcae found to work. I would like to start getting some ready as I heard they work very well on springers. I will get at least one this year. I just need some time on the water before it can happen.
Also, for the jetty fishing, could one use the shrimp? What tackle should one beginner bring to use? Will someony ( like you ) be advising everyone where and when to meet and what we need?
I will fish for anything that bites. I've even been seen fly fishing. I catch and release all of them.
*Fish only bite wet hooks*

Re: What Size Prawn To Use????
Last year used Pro-cure double red and nailed a 22 pounder. With some I cured with scent, some without.Salmon Feast did the best.I bought the whole ones already cooked and sprinkled the dye on
in one of those cheap plastic containers(wife threatened terrible things would happen if I used her Tupperware  )let them sit for a couple days in the frig, rinsed them off and dried them.
Put into vacuum bags add scent and seal then freeze .They keep about forever if you add a little rock salt too.

Snapsnot - I like the procure double red dye, not the cure.
Be careful with that stuff, it will turn everything pink/red that it comes into contact with.
