Default Cannon Downrigger Power Connectors???

I have a pair of Cannon Magnum 10A Electric Downriggers that so far have worked great. I just wired them up to the new boat. One works great the other one doesn't..... I found that one of the power plugs that plug in to the downrigger is no longer any good. Is there any place local where I might be able to buy another factory power plug? Or should I just change them out for a different type?

After no salmon fishing for the last few years in Northern Calif I got mine out of the garage to get things ready and found that the power cord on both of them was hard as a rock and cracking and falling off. I got my owners manual out and found the phone numbers to call. I got the cords in about 5 days. I was also told that if I opened them up to do the work myself it would void the warranty on the motors. I told them if the motors went out i'd buy Scottys.

Go to NAPA and get a set of trailer light plugs... it's a keyed, 2-prong 12v connector... The female end mounts in a box or flush under a gunwhale very well, and it creates a nice universal place to plug things in... downriggers, electric reels, etc... Be sure to shoot the (soldered) butt-splices full of silicone sealer, and use heavy shrink-wrap over the whole thing to seal it up good.

As for voiding the warranty... how long is the warranty on the thing anyway? All of mine are well out of warranty anyway... 2 of my Cannon's being well over 15 years old - and still going strong.

I have the same down riggers and took them to the popular place here in Portland and they replaced both cords with the new style at not charge. They said under warranty and saved me about $90 each. I have them do all my work on them and most of the time it doesn't cost as it is warranty. Must be warranted for life.

The older style connectors where made from a very quick to go brittle rubber-Mine cracked in 3 years-I got the new style cords with new speedier model
after sending them to cannon/johnson outdoors-they got bought out-same with minn-kota-they made me a smoking offer on an exchange-

Good idea, I need some type of plug for electric reels too, I'll check them out.

When I had Canon downriggers my connectors fell apart and I replaced them with the Marinco type and they worked fine. I sold them with my last boat and bought Scotty 1106's for my new boat. My old ones were mini mags.

Cannon downriggers have a lifetime warranty on the motors unless you pop the cover on them which will then void the warranty...

Not a smart move considering you have a good service center right here in Portland.

I Pro Staff there product for 17 years and still have my Cannon DT-IV's and have no plans to get rid of them...No one has a product that does what the DT-IV does or as well.

The rubber portions of my connectors are actually in GREAT shape, still look like new. It was inside the rubber that was not making connection. I managed to pull the connector ends and wiring back out of the rubber and made a new stainless sleeve for one side and replaced the electrical fitting on the other then put both sides back in to the rubber. The connectors on the motor ends was still in great shape and worked fine so I did not void any warranty by taking the unit apart.

Glad to say that my downriggers are both working now!! I will be checking out Napa for the connectors CCC has mentioned as I still want to put a few in for the electric reels. Thanks to all for the suggestions.

TTT as we approach salmon season.

I just got my Cannon back from the popular Portland shop. No charge to replace the brittle cable with the new one. It took them a couple weeks to get to it but I'm guessing the repair times will get longer as the season gets nearer and people start inspecting their downriggers.

Update:
The NAPA parts I've used are as follows:
Mount a few NAPA SME 181047 around the cockpit - I prefer on the UNDERSIDE of something so there's no chance they can trap water when you wash them down.
Replace whatever connector is on the power cable of your downriggers, electric reels, 12v electric fillet knife, etc. with NAPA SME 181053 connectors.

I usually goop the whole affair with the black Cannon conductive grease whenever I plug something into the port - and keep the sockets gooped up when nothing is plugged in.
