Default Smelt - Steelhead - Crabs

I was headed to the coast Saturday morning, but decided to run up and dip my parents and grandma a batch of fresh smelt. Was on the banks of the Cowlitz right at daylight Saturday, it took about 15 minutes to get a limit out of the Cowlitz (I was above carnival market )

I drove to Tillamook, and while at my parents house I talked to a drift boat coming down the Trask. The water was perfect  they had 2 clipped in the boat and released another wild fish. I watched them catch one of the fish which was pretty cool. One of them told me he has registered on ifish but has never gotten around to posting :depressed: :depressed: He told me he would post a report, but I dont see it anywhere. :depressed:

Went crabbing with the family today at Tillamook bay. We managed to pull 38 legal crabs out of the bay in 6 hours. We had a lot of pots working which accounts for the number, but it was kind of slow. We ate most of the crabs on the beach, They are sooooooooo good when they come out of the water and are still hot.

Maybe we should change your Ifish name to......"Bait O' Travel"......motto.....I travel everywhere else to catch a fish since I can't catch a fish in my backyard.

Sounds like you had a great weekend Roy, congrats on some nice crab.

Hey Roy ~ You must have a seceret on the crabben! We pulled traps on Saturday with a zillion other crabbers and blanked! NADA! ZIPO! Using shad, we dropped in the south jetty area, then moved over to crab harbor. What a zoo! and nothing to show for it. The wife and I crabbed a few days before x-mass and had more then the 24 after 2 pulls. Never had it this bad!

What a great weekend BOE.

Don't you just love it when a plan comes together.

I hope you saved some crab for the jetty fishing in March. I plan on doing some crabbing at the camp-out.

John - I dont how many people were out Saturday, but I think they were all back with their brother on Sunday. I was attributing some of the poor crabbing due to all the pots in the bay. Just getting in and out of crab harbor to our little piece of beach was tough, with all the floats.

We were using predominanty shad for bait also.

We did best where we could get away from all the other pots. There are only so many keepers in the bay on any day, and with lots of pots next to yours, it just lowers your chance of catching the few legal crabs in the area before somebody else catched them.

Gregg - I am hearing about the few fish being caught in my backyard, I am not wanting to get started to early and get burned out on catching springers Gotta pace myself
