Default Cut or Whole Herring for Springers?

Going out Wednesday for a little springer fishing in St. Helens. What seems to work better cut plug or Whole herring. What size would be the best for each of them?

Always plug cut unless you cant find big enough herring. Better scent....Might want to try sardine wrapped Kwik Fish in the channel around Gilbert boat launch. Let me know how you do, I was thinking of going next weekend in that same area.

I was in the channel Sunday and caught a 25lbs. springer trolling plug cut blue herring. I prefer green, but they're hard to come by, so I'll hold onto my green until April. Just cut the blue back further than you normally would..

Its on the northside of the channel. I beleive its the sauvie Island bridge? Its down by the "clothing optional" Beach on the Columbia. Take a left at the gravel road at the back of the beach. Nice ramp with dock and restrooms.

Take the Sauvie Island bridge and drive along the river. Its on the Columbia and is about 200 yards from the Multnoma channel. Anybody have better directions?

I hunt a lot on Sauvies so let's see. You can get there a couple of ways once you are on the island. The ramp is actually on the Gilbert River that flows between Sturgeon Lake on the Island (known as that &@!#&* refuge to us duck hunters) to the Multnomah channel. The easiest is to take Hwy 30 out of Portland, and turn right onto Suavie Island across the Multnomah Channel (big sign, only island access). Once you are on the island you can either take the first left to loop under the bridge and come up the Willamette/Columbia side of the island until you take a right on Reeder road(kind of counter intuitive) or stay strait on Sauvie Island road and turn right on Reeder Road. They will both take you to the section of Reeder Road that drives down to the narrow end of the island. After about 10-15 miles of driving on the island you will see a sign for the Gilbert River boat ramp to the left. Just remember that they require a stupid Sauvie Island parking pass to park on the public sections of the island (to pay for a cop to harass you about it). You can get the pass at the convenience store just as you come across the bridge. Do me a favor and see if you can get the Asian woman behind the counter to smile. She's a tough nut to crack!
