Default Yamaha Extended Warranty worth it?

I was told yamaha has a free promotion for extended warranty, I guess I'm being charged 400 bucks for the extra 3 years. Are they pretty reliable? Should I buy extended, yes or no?

I just saw an add on Yamaha's that said buy a new 75-300 HP and get a 3 year warranty upgrade. Check on that before you shell out dollars.

In the past you could take some cash back or add 3 years to your 3 year warranty. I'd take the extended warranty. In 6 years, I'd expect some thing to go out, (a tilt switch, relay, or something else that corroded, but I'm usually in the salt.

yea thats what I explained to him, but he said yamaha still charges the dealer and its up to the dealer to give it for free or not.
I think ill pass it up, and give yamaha a call myself.

I've never bought an extended warranty in my life. But I will on my next outboard.

I've got a 2005 150yami 4-stroke. It had leaked oil since the 1st year, not alot...just enough to be irritating. I had the powerhead pulled twice (2 different dealers) to chase the leak. It never got fixed. Then after the original warranty expired, my original dealer got Yamaha to authorize another "fix" on their dime. Another powerhead removal (3rd) and new gaskets etc....it still leaked. I was resolved that I'd be the .1% of yamaha owners that were disappointed. At 225 hours (12/30/09) the oil pump gear grenaded and smoked my engine! My original dealer (3Rivers Marine...thanks guys) went to bat for me and got a new powerhead from yamaha with installation for FREE!

In closing...know your dealer well, and your warranty better! I will buy the extended warranty on my next O/B.

If it is a FACTORY Yamaha warranty then go for it. When I bought a Suzuki I had a choice, $300 (i think) cash back or 3 year extended. I took the warranty. When I sold the boat I found that the extension was through a third party and was a pain to transfer. They also said the were sticklers for documenting maintenance (they wanted receipts for oil changes etc, even if you did your own). Gave me the feeling that unless all of your "I"s were dotted and "T"s were crossed you werent getting much fixed during the extended period.

SNIT,
I have a 2006 150 Yamaha that has a real slow oil leak and I hauled it 4 hrs to Y Marine to get it fixed. They could not locate the source of the leak nor could they even get it to leak at all. They said Yamaha would not let them do any repairs until they were sure of the site of the problem. I took it home and just went out today for a short run and the oil showed up again. I am sure it is that power head gasket but cannot prove it. My warranty is up this December, I may have to find out just how much an extended warranty cost. I do not like the sounds of losing an oil pump!

Fishrubber, your problem sounds similiar to mine. When Yamaha authorized the 1st "after warranty expired" repair it took alot of prodding by my dealer. Yamaha wanted a Rep. onsite to witness and authorize each step of the repair process. The engine wouldn't "leak" while in the shop, so a dye was added to the oil and the boat was water tested at a local lake for about an hour. Then back at the shop a blacklight (CSI LOL) was used to locate the leak. The powerhead removal process was repeated and new gaskets were installed. If it wasn't for this authorized and supervised process, I doubt Yamaha would of helped me when the oil pump gear assembly grenaded. Luckily, my dealer felt that I truly had a "bum" engine and they fought and clawed for Yamaha to "make it right". If you still have warranty left, I'd bother the heck out of Yamaha to get the oil leak fixed!!!! Like I said before, I feel the dealer is as important as the brand of boat and engine you purchase.

I know on one of my Yamaha engines they mailed me an offer on an extended warranty prior to the old one expiring. Ask about that and you may not have to decide now. Call Yamaha directly.
