Default Halibut

Hello Fellow I-Fishers,

I had to relocate to Northern California a few years back and miss the Oregon Coast like you wouldn't believe. Anyway, a friend and I would like to fish for Halibut on May 14th and 15th. We would be driving up and staying in Depoe Bay. We would like to use your gear and would gladly contribute $200 per day for fuel. Anyone want to take us up on the offer? By the way, I have filled several open seats on multiple occasions on I-Fish and can provide references if needed. This is a serious inquiry and I guarantee that if you commit to us, we will 100% be on time and ready to harpoon some flatties. Thanks

Curious here why I don't have any takers and would appreciate some input. Is it too far out to commit to these trips? Am I not offering to contribute enough for fuel, bait, time? Is it that I don't have a lot of posts? I am just a big fan of ocean fishing and miss the opportunities on the Oregon Coast and I want to fish. Please respond if you have any constructive criticism. Thanks

Have you checked with guides for this date. There are plenty on here. I took a ride on Maverick out of Newport and it is a great ride. I dont get down there to do much but I am sure people have there usual people that they fish with. The money you are offering can be taken wrong, as far as hiring someone to take you out without being a guide.

I would just keep your eye out for an open seat or get a guide or charter.

Just my opinion

Mike

I'm with iwanttofish on this one. $200 is a very generous offer. However, that amount is probably illegal.
I'll take a guess at a less subtle version of what iwanttofish said about your offer being taken wrong: That's the kind of offer an undercover officer would make to see if anyone would take an offer to "guide" without a license.

Hopefully, one of our Ifish Guides can confirm my "guess," but I think I'm pretty close to accurate. $200 and using the boat owners gear sounds like "guiding" to me, which requires a license.

If you're sincerely just looking open seats, check back in early May.
If you're an undercover cop, then "<insert four letter word here> you !"

Thank you very much for your constructive criticism. I had no idea about the legal ramifications of my offer. I have received a couple of very helpful private messages and thanks to those who have replied. Since I live in Sacramento I was just trying to cement some plans as I have a pretty good distance to cover. I look forward to fishing the Oregon Coast pretty soon. Tight lines to all.

I don't make plans for halibut because of the weather, I will go in a heartbeat if a good window opens up. To have paying guest that have a hard date puts undue pressure on the skipper to go. Bad situation for any skipper to put themselves into. That could be one reason why you are not getting many replies, there's a lot of responsible skippers here. Besides most already have crews and not enough room for 2 more. Charters or guides is your best bet.
