Help, My Boat won\'t steer
HELP!!
My boat's steering cable must be siezed for the weekend (jk)
I can't get the steering wheel to move to the right. Like it is stuck or locked or siezed. Does anyone know what is going on with my boat?
I want to go gator fishing tomorrow but unless I get this fixed I'm not going anywhere

Re: Help, My Boat won\'t steer
Can you move the motor to the right or left by pushing on the motor? If not loosen the nut on the steering cable right by the motor. Then put some wd40 on, keep working it sideways and it should break free. Once you get it free keep it greased and use grafite on the steering arm at the motor. Oil, wd40, or grease will not work its way into the bushings and that is normally where it will seize. Also check under the dash and see if the lock pin has come out which holds the cable in for the steering wheel. Hope this will solve your problem. This problem is generally caused by water getting into the cable at the nut and then it has a corossive effect which cause's the freeze up.

Re: Help, My Boat won\'t steer
Thanks Cagey, If this works, than and when we get our keepers I will save you a chunk  Going to try and fix it in the morning.
The tides doesn't turn tomorrow until 8:30 a.m., so I will try this in the morn and see if it works.
Be at the F4 and I will bring you your chunk of fish for helping me.

fishchaser,
If cagey is right , just give him a couple of day old jelly filled and call it good. The only flotilla he goes to is at the donut kettle down the street as he sips the floaters from his coffe.

Re: Help, My Boat won\'t steer
It's OK water dog. It didn't work. But I did call a friend who is an outboard motor mechanic and he walked me through how to take apart the clean the trim tube and how put it together, and how to hone it out and lube it and put it back together.
He says that they give 2 hours to do this job, I did it in an hour and a half. Not bad for some old gun repairer.
Than took it out on the Willamette to do a shake down run. She works great.
Did a little Salmon fishing around the Sellwood bridge, than ran up to the botom of Meldrum bar. Nothing seen or caught. :depressed:
Going to anchor down in the Oregon City area tomorrow w/STZ II. Will let you know the results.

Re: Help, My Boat won\'t steer
Sorry that was not your problem but iam glad you got it fixed. Nothing worse than having to stay home because the motor is broke or not enough money to buy doughnuts.
We are headed for St. Helens tomorrow. Be in Troutmysters boat. Look for us, i will be the one with doughnut jelly on my kisser.
