Coho and Chinnook forcasts
A litttle bit of a let down in the news about the coho predictions for this summer. Hope they are wrong. Good news on the Chinnook numbers.
Looks like the target in the ocean will be the nooks for sure. Shorter season possibly all around this year? Still looking forward to having fun out there. Just can't wait.

Re: Coho and Chinnook forcasts
Bernie,
Where are you getting your run estimates from? I looked at both ODFW and WDFW websites and can find no run predictions for this coming fall. Just curious what the #'s are supposed to be. Seems a bit early for a prediction to me. I thought that normally happened in March and April.

Re: Coho and Chinnook forcasts
Oh darn, only 1,000,000 coho out there. It might be lamost as bad as back when we "only" had 600,000 coho and it took a couple hours to limit out

Re: Coho and Chinnook forcasts
David...am I hearing you corrctly?? Are you really going to waste you and your clients time chasing after so few fish?? I thought I knew you better than that...As for the Kings they don't like to bite in the estuary do they?? I say wait until the 3rd week of August or so and then fish above I-5 where they really bite good. Thats really what you meant to say isn't it David?? Now don't with me it wouldn't look good!! Plus arguing just makes people
OK, enough icons!

Re: Coho and Chinnook forcasts
i dont think you all understood what i meant....my bad heres the quote from the oregonlive website....bill monroe's article
"Hatchery coho numbers are expected to plummet nearly 75 percent, from 1.4 million in summer 2001 to 362,000 this year. "
but chinook fishing should be better
"Offsetting the disappointing coho news, however, is the potential for 678,000 fall chinook into the Columbia, the third-largest run since 1948, surpassing last year's run of 544,000 fish. "

Re: Coho and Chinnook forcasts
sure hope the runs look better than the forcast. they projected 1.7 million hatchery and 50K wild coho returns last year and guess what, a wopping 1.4 million hatchery and 163K natives returned.
that's plenty of fish for fertilizer. i'd like to bring a couple home.

Re: Coho and Chinnook forcasts
I will certainly avoid the Columbia estuary in August and September. Just not worth bothering. :depressed:

Re: Coho and Chinnook forcasts
Thanks husker for putting the information down. Yes, I was referring to the ORegonian article. So everyone should stay home.

Another thing, the managers have been known to underestimate too.
