Default Going to fish Yaquina Bay and have a couple questions.

Could someone offer a couple of pointers on fishing for bottom fish in the bay? I've heard large plastic lead-head jigs can work but that's about it. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Hello Damon,
Your leadheads will work fine off the jetties and that would be the most productive area to fish. In the bay proper itself there is some fishing by way of perch and sea trout(greenling). The pilings near the OSU docks, the bridge supports, and the finger jetties beyond the bridge on the south side are good spots to try. Small sandshrimp and clamnecks on bait hooks work fine for them.
The upper bay holds some sturgeon. Try around marker 25 with sand or mud shrimp.
Also the Herring should be showing up soon. The people at South Beach Marina can be helpful. Stop by and chat with them.
Good Luck!

Damon, I'll be down as well, mostly to drift the Siletz but since we're stayin at Embarcadero, I can't help but crab the bay and look for herring. Look for my ragged brown glass driftboat with the 5-hp Merc. I ran into a fly guide at the Show last week who said to fly fish crab patterns off the jetty around low tide for bass, perch and who knows what else. I'm not much of a fly fisherman but I'm gonna give it a try, sounds fun too out of the ordinary to pass up. Look for another recent thread on herring around the green tank.
