Default Salty dog boat trial run

Ok so a number of you guys and gals are interested in the Ocean as a fishing ground.

Is your boat up to it? Do you know how much fuel you will burn?

I plan on running the Chinook landing to Bonneville and back run on Saturday 16 Feb 2002. Does anyone want to join me? I'm doing this mainly to test some major engine and hull repairs. I'd much rather have a failure here in stumptown than out to sea.

The plan is to run from Chinook to Bonneville and back to check fuel burn rate and all other systems on the boat. A flawless run will give me the confidence to tackle Big Blue this summer.

Anyone?

We could meet after and discuss group activities this summer.

Pilar,
That sounds like a good idea. If I can get Friday night off, count me in. When do you plan on launching? I need to do a quick oil and spark plug change when I get off in the morning. Sounds like fun. What is the estimated milage round trip?

This run clocks at about 60 statute miles from the Chinook Landing to the boating deadline at Bonneville. S. Beach Marina to the Chicken Ranch is about 65 statute miles.

There is a huge difference between navigation across open water like the Chicken Ranch run and following the river to the Dam.

In the open Ocean there are winds, currents and no landmarks. As a result the mileage to the chicken Ranch varies everytime I go out there. 88 miles one time and then 70 the next time.

Hey Dogfishboy. At least the damage was obvious and its pretty sure that it is fixed now. New cable, no worries. 30 miles each way in reverse? Ouch...

Typical mileage for a boat really stinks. From a mile to the gallon for a big block jetsled to 4 or more for the small I/O power plants.

Mileage on the Ocean can vary for a boat as well. The same boat ran the Chicken Ranch 2 years ago for 88 miles and 22 gallons of fuel. 1 year later the run was 102 miles and we burned 34 gallons. The first trip ran at about 22 mph both ways. Much rougher and slower the second time and we never planed out even once. We probably averaged 15 Mph.

That's what the practice run is all about. Instead of guessing you can know for sure how much fuel it takes.

I'm looking for a rider on Saturday morning. Or even boats to run with. We might wet a line up by the fishery if we get a chance.

Anyone?

I'd be up for it, but I have plans Saturday morning. What time are planning to shove off? I wouldn't be able to make it to Chinook until about 11:30.
I could bring my sled, or ride along. Didn't you say something about haveing a few issues to work out with the Pilar? How long does it take to float from Bonneville to Chinook of you break again?

Rick, as early as possible. 7 ish. Hey NorRivDave, watch it! No dissing the fish blood encrusted boat.

No issues that I'm aware of. This is just a semiannual deal. Do the outdrive service, weigh the boat and make the mileage check run.

A well maintained boat keeps the departure/return ratio equal to one.

It also give me a chance to snoop for sturgeon holes on the way.

Arrgh, I forgot about the East wind. Is it an afternoon deal or all day?

Maybe I'll just have to put on a fishing clinic at the confluence of the two biggest rivers in the state instead.

Usually it gets worse as the day goes on. This morning it got going pretty early, around 900am. The weather channel is calling for it to start out around 10mph and build to around 15mph by noon.

Pilar... FYI the east wind is really whippin' out here today. You may want to keep an eye on the forcast for tomorrow. I have made that run several times before but learned my lesson quick on windy days. One of the last ones was putting in at Rooster Rock and heading up to Bonnie. Took twenty minutes on the way up and an hour and forty-five minutes on the way back doing about 6-12 mph. If the wind is kickin' like today should be a good simulation of ocean conditions while testing out your boats range. Getting an early start should help.

Have fun and be careful.
