A Gloomis 9000 is my favorite and I've heard that TH makes a rod that's comperable. I drift rod will work too if that's all you got. I recomend either 50# TUFline/Power Pro with a 20 or 25# mono leader.

Sound like the boat you got will work but it would be nice to have a kicker motor on it.

I have a 6 hp kicker and a 35 lb electric.

I wasn't brand specific on my rod question I would just like to know the length and
action needs to fish plugs the best. I will look up the rod you suggested.
Thanks.

Ther are several great rods on the market the G.Loomis 9000 Hsr (hot shot rod)is good all around unless you fish big fish waters or heavy flow waters like the columbia, rogue etc.I have a new Model that is a 8-17 ln wt 7'6" one piece.it has tip action about 12 inches into the tip while running a tadpolly on the clackamas and will handle 20# main line with out having any problems with big fish from 15-25 pounds it is also great for rivers where you will hit a few springers in the later part of steelhead season. If you are interested email me at lrods@lrods.com . I will give you all of the direct info. Thanks,Lyle Froyd

I can't aford the highend rods so I fish with a Med - to med heavy in 7 to 8 1/2 long. The lamiglas rep sais that longer rods are becoming more of a regular thing because they obsorb the shock better then short ones. However most of the time you are not holding the rod when pluging so I thing as long as the rod is not to stiff you should be ok. I use a Lami Keni King and it works great.

I was in Fisherman's at OC this afternoon and saw that they had their Northriver (i believe that was the name) one-piece 8'-6" plug rods on sale for $59.99.

I was checking out the Allstar rods at the sportmans show and they have a 7 1/2 foot 8-15# rod that I think would be ultra sweet for plugging. I'm thinking I might buy a couple.

They were listed right at $100.

The types of actions I like in my plug rods is a fast action rod. That way you have a light tip and good backbone. I fish HS9000 (8-12) for Steelhead and HS1021(10-20) for Salmon out of my drift boat and I am going to Build 2 HS981's (10-20) for salmon also. Will probably go with some HS930's(8-15) also These are all Loomis Blanks but there are some great rods for very economoical prices around. The North river rods from Fishermans are real good or give TH a call about building something or look at his specials from time to time.Allstar and Rainshadow are making great stuff, Superfly can hook you up there. Huge amount of quality stuff out there that shouldn't have to break the bank.

I like the TH 9000c 7'6" 6-12# xfast action, great tip, plenty of backbone.
My favorite plug rod is the TH 965c. 8' 10-20# a great action, soft tip, big enough for chinook, yet soft enough for the smaller steelie plugs.
the TH 9000c is priced under $140 the TH 965c runs $165.

Default Plug rod for steelhead

I have never pluged for steelhead and don't know what kind of rod works best.
I only have 9'6" drift rods but would like to get a rod for plugs.
I don't know if the typeof boat used matters but for now I am fishing out of a 14' flat bottom
boat with a 35 hp pump, but I am going to get a drift boat or a cataraft in the near future.
