Default And that's one... (first Springer)

Now that the first one is out of the way, we can get down to the serious frenzy.

Stomach was stuffed with 25-30 smelt, all smallish.

Kwikfish in the Longview area. Saw 3 fish counting this one for eight boats, which is pretty good for this early.

The secret to catching this fish was impaling my fancy Cabelas Gortex rainpants on a plug hanging where you see the mass of plugs in the lower right. I was sitting down, ignoring my rod, trying to flatten the barb of one of those %^&*$#@@ owner hooks to back it out when I heard the drag squak. I look up, and the rod, my brand new, virgin springer rod, with the sexy gold guides, is bent over, practically to the water, in that bow we love but have almost forgotten since last year.

The drift out to get him was a complete cluster situation. The crew, shown in the picture, has gotten lax and soft in the off season, and we had some issues getting off the rope. Three sources of fire between the cabin and the rope cleat may have had something to do with that. But a few choice anglo-saxonisms, and we managed.

The fish has met his sauce, and man, there is nothing as good as the first springer of the season.

Now, I take no credit for those pants and that hat. That's my friend, Tom, and he certinaly has his own sense of style.

The picture does no justice to that fish - it was chrome... As if there is a dark springer in March. And boy, did it taste good...

Yeah, I have a few of them. Also a few silver and chartreuse jobbies, like about 40 of them. Lest anyone think I jest when I say, I don't care about the color of a kickfish, as long as one of the colors is chartreuse

So they're chowing on smelt, but "nobody" trolls them?

Nice fish. I guess since there's already a hole in the new pants, you can try it again to put another on next time.

Good job SH Now just so I have this down I have to hook my pants first and then I get a take down?

I think a Kwikfish with the same color pattern as those pants would be killer!!!

Time, you have to hook yourself in the pants, near a vital member, in a state of protein food induced euphoria (those atkins folks should be regulated) in order to induce the full luck state...

Sorry, but that's what it takes to be in the pro leagues.

Way to go S.H. I tried all my usual tricks yesterday (coffee cup perched precariously on the gunnel by rod handle, sitting in bow preparing anchor rope with center window closed, I even nodded off for a while.) but no take downs. Leave it to you to come up with "hook in the pants" technology. I can't wait to try it

Congrats on breaking in the new rod and your pants. Sweet fish and there are still 498,657 more on the way!!!

Lured,

Bring it on, baby. I called that fish home all the way from Alaska with the Silver Secret Sauce. He was going by your spot so fast his wake swamped one of the smaller boats.

Seriously, one of the fish that was caught would have been caught by your left hand rod, had you been where you were supposed to be. The other was up at the point above the beaver trees. Sealions were working around a bit, and caught at least one that we saw.
