Default Salvage question

Is there any possible way to salvage a cork grip off a fly rod? I know the simple answer is no. But what if the blank it is on is of no value and can be destroyed in the process?

Can you drill/sand it away from the inside? Has anyone done this?

Or what if the new rod that it was going was of a smaller diameter then the original blank and could be fitted as is (ie still under the grip(just the grip) but over the new blank) – I will not be sure of the dimensions till I get the old rod apart but is this even an option? And what would it do to the action of the new rod?

Lots of questions and I hope that someone has a couple answers. This is a build for myself so thinking outside the box is an option.

Thanks
Brian

Like I needed a 10 foot 4 wt. But hell I didn’t have one – and im sure it will have a use someday.

Default Re: Salvage question

If were to try to salvage that grip, (and it would have to be special) I think that I would :
1. Determine the diameter needed
2. Use a Bell Hanger* bit of the correct diameter and carefully nibble out the old blank material. Start with a normal length bit, until it's maxed out and then switch to the Bell hanger.

*Bell Hanger bit
Just an extended length bit that resembles a typical metal-cutting bit on the business end.
Don't try to use an auger bit, there is nothing to center on for this application.

doh Re: Salvage question

If the blank of the new one will fit inside the old one ...
Just make arbors out of white masking tape to fit and epoxy it on ...
The only problem will be no flex at all in the grip area except at the new reel seat ...
You will just mess it up trying to drill out the old blank ...
