Stainless steel floatilla???
Death to FB! They have set the <30 fathom fishery, it opens May 1. No deepwater days set yet. Does anyone know when they set the days?
Thanks all for the huge response on the Saltwater Parish thread. What I am asking you to do is copy any reports about Ocean conditions or fish tales to the board for everyone to read, pictures too. The Email list is to pass correspondance and plan trips. Anyone that want to be copied just join Threemuchs Email list. See Saltwater Parish thread.
Back to the briny floatilla. A few words of caution here. Some of us have done this trip many times or at least a few. The rest of us have a lot of work to do. Before we saddle up X number of boats and go west, all of the boats have to be happy and well equipped. All the boats that plan to complete the trip. More on what well equipped means later. You absolutely must know your fuel consumption rate and your limits on weather and Ocean conditions.
A suggestion I would make is a near shore bottomfishing trip or two so the less experienced can find their sea legs.
Which number would it be? 5 ... 6...
Expect this to happen in early May. Realize that we get about 50% of the days scheduled in May canceled due to ugly Ocean. So a backup day should be in there too.
I just plan on all the open days and then attend at least two of them. Later in the summer it gets easier as the weather mellows out.
Back to you ...

Pilar: Maybe a short seminar on equipment and safety. I'm willing to do that in the portland area if someone would help. Have many 1000's of miles on big blue, some of them good some bad.

Re: Stainless steel floatilla???
Hey, doesn't anyone want to do it out on big blue?
No I don't mean Offshore drilling.
Don't be shy I've seen more than a few Ifish stickers on small boats out of sight of land.

Re: Stainless steel floatilla???
Like Hound, I'm ready if we aren't talking too far out. I've got the desire and the kahunas to go far but not the gas tank.
How far are you talking here?

Re: Stainless steel floatilla???
Pilar,
I am game, and eager. I like the idea of some close trips. I need to see about a bigger gas tank for any long trips. I need to get my confidence level up in the boat. The hull is good for the sea (21' starcraft), but I am a little nervous about the engine (1966 4 banger). Old things do that too me....

Re: Stainless steel floatilla???
Ok, so maybe some fishing for lurkers near the jaws at Newport. The reef starts near the green can and goes 6 or 7 miles south to Seal Rock.
The quest for FB 30 miles out could be a second event.
What do you think?
Doesn't have to be Newport either. Early in the season the crab off Tillamook along the Bay Ocean beach is hard to beat.

Threemuch II will be there! My vote would be for Tillamook, the shorter the tow the better.

Re: Stainless steel floatilla???
Pilar,
Count me in for some flatties bro. Newport works for me. I am game for a short trip if thats the plan. I have a 42 gallon fuel tank but can carry a 10 gallon reserve. Let me know what the plan is. It will have to be a good day weather wise to take my sled. I have had her 20 plus miles out a couple times last year out of Astoria and will gladly cross that Newport bar.

Re: Stainless steel floatilla???
I'm In!
But the sled can only go if the ocean is in decent shape. To much pain the last time out. But even the jetty has put out some decent lings.
At the very least I'll be there for the evening get together?

Just let me know. I'll go. Want to get in on those flatties out there since I probably won't do the Alaska thing this year.

Re: Stainless steel floatilla???
Pilar,
The saltwater Parish is a good idea; there is safety in numbers as well as good odds of putting together floatillas with short notice.
You have dropped some hints about vessel condition and readiness. On that note, for all who hope to do big blue this spring and have yet to accumulate any experience in this endeavor, allow me to share my version your '2 of everyting rule'. I call it the 'reduncancy factor', and it may take a bit of time for your parishoners to get prepared.
The redundancy factor is directly proportional to the 'Huston, we have a problem' and yet 'we came home in one piece' quotient. The redundancy factor is what stacks the odds in our favor when man and machine test their limits and is a major factor determinng the degree to which small boats on these local seas stay on (keyword) TOP of the water.
**** TWO OF EVERYTHING*****
BE EQUIPED WITH TWO.....:
float plans
engines
fuel supplies
fuel filters
water separators
radios (or one and a cell phone)
navigations systems
times as many tools as you could possibly need
bilge pumps
batteries
tow lines
fire extinguishers
flares
life preservers
persons on board to pray if you screw up
Did I forget anything?
Pleasure vessel skippers who get into redudancy and adhere to this rule, and pick their days wisely, are likely to find that they and their boats can do more than they realized. They can experience all that salt water has to offer, including but not limited to the adventure...more than a few times.

Re: Stainless steel floatilla???
I would be game if it where on a Sunday. Saturdays are just bad for me. :depressed: (Some guys gota work the weekend ya know.) I have been out as far as 25 miles. Comfortable but cautious. If it worked with my schedual to go I would need a crew of one or two to go with me. I have only salmon fished in the ocean so one would need to be a willing guide for the flatty and/or bottom fishing tech.
Till then,
BlueWater.
