Pitching and Flipping from a Pontoon
Just wanted for those of us on kickboats to know that sky is the limit with these babies. I love my pontoon and here is a video made by a couple guys from the pontoon club im in.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wDe-B...eature=channel
there are both pitches and flipps from the pontoon seen in this film. they are not easy but very effective. especially since you can nose right up to the cover, and not worry about scratching your boat.
A pontoon club was trying to be started in the Lebanon area. I don't know if it went through or not. But i know there are many of us out there, and these crafts are great for back sloughs, rivers, and lakes.
enjoy..
sorry for the cliche music...

Re: Pitching and Flipping from a Pontoon
like i said there has been much talk to start one.
it would be nice to just throw a "turkey shoot". set up a time and a place. "follow me bags" or fish baskets were used for a lont time in our club, and can easily hold a 3 fish limit. even a 5 fish limit if its small.
i know of some experienced pontoon fishermen on this site. both roger and badhabit have stuck some very nice fish in some beautiful waters.

Re: Pitching and Flipping from a Pontoon
Watched the video and saw 1 flip in a spot where a pitch would have been the ticket. No need to get that close since there was no cover requiring pinpoint accuracy of a flip. Just gonna spook more fish with no benefit.
The problem with flipping out of a pontoon, besides the lack of angle and lack of line, is that with a tune you can't get into the places where a flip is necessary. Big cover, big snags = impossible access, or popped boat.
In a boat you can nose in, lean over the bow and lip your fish that is going to be stuck, or pegged to wood, vegetation or other innaccessable cover. In a pontoon if you peg that bass your going to have to rip it out, either breaking off, or ripping the fish up. you simply can't get a pontoon where you can nose a boat in.
I see some fundamental flaws with flipping from a pontoon and a lack of necessity. Can you physically do it?...some can...but why? When?
Just my opinion

ok, here is another video depicting pitching and flippin as well as the versatility of the pontoon boat. It is a video of John Lake, a well respected angler amongst the delta who fishes both from a boat and from a pontoon boat.
if you still dont believe it can happen, i will gladly pay for your entry fee into any of the pontoon tournaments held on the delta or clear lake. you would have about 6 more this year to choose from. just bring that pontoon down and we'll teach ya to flip and pitch for some toads

Re: Pitching and Flipping from a Pontoon
looks really cool. my dad owns a pontoon and he swears by it. I previously was limited to my float tube. While I love it, especially in the wind where i can hold position with my feet and there fore still fish, I have upgraded to a sit on top kayak. Cant wait to get it out on the water. I can cover lots of ground, get good exercise, access really skinny water, and NOT have to put any gas in it. Would i be allowed to join your "toon" club?? if so, count me in!

Re: Pitching and Flipping from a Pontoon
Count me in as another angler who loves to fish from his pontoon! Started in a float tube, but about 9 years ago went to a toon and havent looked back. If a club were to start in the area, I would be all over it.....Always looking forward to learning from others and a little friendly competition.

Re: Pitching and Flipping from a Pontoon
Someone set a time and a place to fish and lets see how much people we can get to come out. I'm fairly new to the area so I cant really help with a location, but Im sure some of you veterans can assist.

Re: Pitching and Flipping from a Pontoon
I haven't tried a toon for bass (except Wickiup), but for covering ponds and any location without a boat ramp, a toon seems like a great way to go.
The videos help, thanks for sharing the techniques!

Re: Pitching and Flipping from a Pontoon
Pontoon club sounds like fun. Tooning for fun is a piece of cake. But to do a tourny style club that changes everything. A tourny ready pontoon is different than a stripped down, lightweight toon. So everyone would have to be on board. But yes, sounds fun.

Re: Pitching and Flipping from a Pontoon
you can cover more water than you think. all you need to start a small tourny would be a "follow me bag". it's a fish basket that sits in the water and will easily hold a 3 fish limit. they are very inexpensive. otherwise, you can switch to a 48qt or so cooler with a pump, air bubler, and aierator and make one out of that. it is very common down south here. you can put 25lbs of fish in a 48qt tank with some rejuvinate to keep them fresh and it will work just fine.

Re: Pitching and Flipping from a Pontoon
Dont really have a club ,however several of us get together almost every sat /sun weather permitting usually out at the delta ponds in eugene. Weve been fishin for a few weeks already with slow but steady results . The aspect of the toon I love so much for delta is one person can easily carry their boat and gear so you can bump from pond to pond solo with no prob. they also have no bottom and a shallow draft which allows for launch and operation in shallow water. NO boat ramp just a trail 3-4 feet wide and Im in. The drawbacks are ,yes lack of range they move easy but I am not rowin across resivoirs, hard to sit for hours in / no place to stand, and sometimes being that low to the water you are at a poor angle to sight fish . Day in and day out for the ponds I fish they are an affordable all around boat .I will not be gettin rid of the 8 ft livingston or the 12 ft jon we use they fish awesome as long as you have a little water to launch in.

Re: Pitching and Flipping from a Pontoon
Tried fishing out of a toon off and on for 2 seasons, just not for me. I will stick with the Jon for small water. I caught a bunch of good fish from the toon but it was rough. Forget it if the wind is blowing. Have fun out there guys.

Re: Pitching and Flipping from a Pontoon
Dragging a chain anchor works great also stow oars inside tubes works like a center board on a sail boat

agreed with the oars...however be warned about the anchor...in streams the can be a bit dicey.
if you use i fins and waders however, you can hold ur position in some nasty winds. if you dont use fins, well then... it will be a long day

Re: Pitching and Flipping from a Pontoon
I have 4 anchors for different streams and conditions and yes you have to use your head and common sense to not get into trouble but they are invaluable tools. For instance on a chain anchor you can set it up with five fingers or two depends on what you are trying to accomplish, I also use a nylon military style sock bag on some rivers and add enough rocks to accomplish my drift. On the Upper John Day I use a chain with three fingers on Clear Lake I carry a 12lb mushroom for windy days, the Delta I carry a 20 lb pyramid, this does not mean I always use them but if conditions warrant, I have them. I like to fish and not fight the conditions and weather.

very good choice...when the fish move up...throw white blades along the bank to invade the nests

Re: Pitching and Flipping from a Pontoon
I got one jigging outside fallen tree lines. The fishing was a little slow for me, but none the less the weather was great and I was out fishing. I think Im going to try it again this weekend, Minto looks like its got potential.

Re: Pitching and Flipping from a Pontoon
It definatly has some big fish in it, I have caught them around 8 pounds, and have seen several others over 7 come out of there. When I fished it, I was fishing pretty shallow and never got bit, I think that they have not moved up to the shallows quite yet. I will get out there again in the next week or so, see how it goes. If you need a buddy next time, let me know.

Mitch,
I was planning to go again this Saturday, the warmer water should help to push those fish out of their holes. Let me know, I wouldnt mind fishing with a fellow basser.
