What is the best knot for braided lines?
Just wondering what the best knot would be for braided lines. I'm am currently using a palomar knot. Is there a better knot?

Re: What is the best knot for braided lines?
It's as simple as a tying an improved clinch knot except that you run your line through the hook/lure eye twice instead of once. I've never had one come undone.

Re: What is the best knot for braided lines?
Good point by salmonator except many of the new lines are very slick and the manufactures recommend not using the the improved clich knot.
Read the details on the package before buying!

Re: What is the best knot for braided lines?
Uh, do these manufacturers happen to sell little joe tie masters? I've used these super lines just a time or two and the knot I mentioned works just fine. But if you'd rather buy the little gadget rather than tie a simple modified clinch knot, the world is your oyster...

Re: What is the best knot for braided lines?
Salmonater,
I normally always use a palomar and have good luck with the braided lines. I'm curious tho, do you run the tag end through both loops on this double clinch knot? Thx ahead of time!

Re: What is the best knot for braided lines?
fisnxtc,
Depends on what you are fishing for.
Use the palomar whenever you can. It's simple and no one has come up with a knot that's stronger or easier to tie. My fishing bud Kevin showed me the albright knot for braid to mono, very quick and easy, never fails. When I go to Mexico I use the bimini twist (line to shock leader) for large bill fish, when it's important to have a shock knot with stretch capabilities but the twist is not easy to tie (involves both hands, arms, feet and tongue)and not necessary for salmon / steelhead fishing (in my opinion).
For salmon and steelhead and keeper-size sturgeon I use:
palomar (whenever possible)
albright - braid to leader (if leader too long for b-swivel)
clinch or improved clinch leader to lure or hook.

Re: What is the best knot for braided lines?
Yes, you are basically tying an improved clinch knot (tag end goes through both the bottom and the top loops) but you run it though the swivel eye twice instead of just once when you start the knot. I believe it just creates more friction to keep the knot from sliding undone. I've been using it for 3 years on tuff-plus for halibut and oversize sturgeon and have never had one come undone to the best of my memory. I've recently used it on 50lb power pro and cannot pull the knot loose. For all I know the tie-master knot might be stronger or better or whatever, this was just a simple option for you to try that works for me... Joe

I use a polomar knot all the time with 50# power pro and 80# tuff line plus. I haven't had any come undone.

Re: What is the best knot for braided lines?
Although people should use the knots that give them the most confidence, I gotta agree with Salmonator. I've used most of the different braided lines at one time or another, and have always used the improved clinch know. Not once have I ever had any kind of problem, or have a knot come undone or break.

Re: What is the best knot for braided lines?
I think the knot Salmonator is refering to is actually the called the trilene knot.
trilene knot
I have been using this knot on 50# and 80# Tuff Line and never had a knot failure. I have a tie master also, but I hate trying to find it when I need to tie a knot. It is easier to just tie a knot and get to fishing.

Re: What is the best knot for braided lines?
Hi guys,
What is the difference between knots? Let me say that all of you are right in regards to your knots. Let me explain what I learned using Berkelys's knot strength tester at the Puyallup Sportsmans show. On both Power Pro and Fireline in 20lb test line the trilene knot was almost useless. The improved trilene which is essentially what salmonator is tying held up well with the knot failing between 18 and 20 lbs. The double palomar was similar in strength but I had two that self destructed at about 7lbs. The big differnce is that by tying with the tiemaster the line broke between 28 and 32 lbs, note that I said the line broke it was not knot failure...in the others it was knot failure.
Thats what I know!
Jim

Re: What is the best knot for braided lines?
This knot may have another name and if it does I apologize. I figured it out on my own and it is so tuff it will only tighten with braid. Mono will lock up and snap before it will snug down. I'm mailing the jpg to Jennie so she can post it here. I have no idea how.

Re: What is the best knot for braided lines?
I've always wondered, what is the purpose for tying a knot that will not break before the main line breaks. If you snag your slinkie on the bottom don't you want the line to break at the knot rather than 5 to 50 feet, or even more, up the main line. I think the main reason for using say 6lb leader with 8lb mainline is to break the leader before the mainline. Personally, I don't think I want my knot stronger than the rest of my setup. If something has to break,Id prefer it to be at the knot. I can't remember the last time I lost a fish because the knot failed. Just my thoughts on this.

Re: What is the best knot for braided lines?
Hey Wiser,
You may have a point I honestly do not know since I don't fish slinkies. My set up is done in such a manner if my lead hangs up I lose the lead and replace it.
As for a knot that is stronger than the mainline...primarily it allows you to fish much lighter than your used to...lighter line means a better more natural presentation. Better more natural presentation means more hookups.
But for me it goes further...I love fishing light, I love the challenge that I must be ready for any strange move or else the fish is gone. When fishing this way it is imperative to have the best knot possible.
Just my opinion on things
Knot trying to
Have a great day!
Jim

Re: What is the best knot for braided lines?
I use Palomar any time I can. Easiest to tie, strongest.
The only time I dont use it is when I am tieing something HUGE on like a Halibut Spreader or something I can't get the loop around, then I go with an Trilene knot.

Re: What is the best knot for braided lines?
I have had that trilene knot break on me twice. :depressed: If I were to use that knot I would double the line throughout the whole process, it becomes closer to a uniknot. I will use the tiemaster for sturgeon from a boat where it is more convenient.

I've posted this one before. Don't know the name, but it works well and is easy to tie, even when cold fingered.

Don't know what it is called. Works on all kevlar braid lines. Does not part.
