Default washing Kwikfish

Do any of you who use baitwraps on your Kwikfish wash them periodically to remove the oil buildup? If so what do you use? I noticed that my kwicky box was smelling a little even though I promptly remove herring wraps when done fishing.

I like Dr. Bronner's Pure Castile Soap. It's a pure vegetable based, biodegradable, non-detergent soap that cuts through the grease and leave my plugs with a lovely aroma.

Lemon Joy works. It won't deter the bite. I don't run funky smelling plugs or old scents. Have you notied that year old herring oil that has been in the sun on and off smells different than a fresh bottle?

I washed them about an hour ago with lemon joy (its what I keep in the boat for hands). After thorough rinsing they still have slight lemon smell hope that goes away.

Another thing you might try is warm water and crest toothpaste, yes crest toothpaste.

I cleaned all my plugs with this and was totally amazed by how much crud was removed. The paste also polishes the plug/kwik-fish.

This is a proven method which many guides use to this day.

Good Luck!

I scrub my hands with tootpaste after fishing or handling fish. It really gets the stink off your hands like no soap can. It also removes the plaque from your finger nails

I spray my Kwikies with a shot of WD-40, let them set for 10 -15 minutes and then wash them down with lemon Joy. Don't worry about the lemon smell left on the plugs its actually a good thing. Some guides in Alaska actually use lemon Pledge (that's right PLEDGE) on their plugs.

The best thing I've found however, to keep my plugs bright and shiny is - keep them clean. Don't let them set more than overnight with wraps on, don't let the goo dry, and when adding oils, wash them off (with WD-40) immediately after use. I always remove the wraps and at least rinse the plugs off just before pulling out at the ramp. Eliminates a lot of mess when I get home.

Got some that are right at 10 years old and still getting the job done. A little chewed (actually some are alotta chewed) but the nooks still think they're pretty enough to chomp!

Best color - #994, silver/chartruese head
Second best color - Bubba, silver with flame stripes and butt
Third best - Fickle Pickle, chartruese metalic
Fourth best - Blue Magoo. blue metalic

I'll keep an eye out for you Streetwalker. I run a red 19' Northriver with black canvas. You must work four tens with your friday fishing. Any way you swing it quality week days can be key.

Hear this suggestion at the sports show, and someone siad you will end up with a clear(or whatever color is under the paint) plug. The lemon joy was mentioned as the commercial trollers use this on their gear as well. The heat generated in the dishwasher seems to add to the problem so I might try the dishwasher with very little soap because it is basically powdered bleach and will remove the color. Use a mild cycle if you want to give it a try.

I use sunlight because it is biodegradable. The lemon scent never seems to scare off the fish. Also it's good to have on board to spray down in the bilge to emulsify any stray gas or oil. Keeps ya from blowing up too! I've seen at least one guide use the childrens watermelon liquid soap to clean up and then he used it for scent on the plug. It caught fish too! Whats worse is he'll probably read the post- the secrets out.

Put them in your automatic dishwasher and cycle twice, once with detergent and once to rinse. One important thing though is to do it when you don't expect your wife to be home for several hours and don't forget to take them out before she gets home.
