Re: i want to get in to flyfishing???
A good place to start is at your local fly shop. How I got started was the local shop had a free one day class that covered all the basics from casting to knots. The shop can also start you toward your first setup because most have from the inexpensive to "I can't believe it costs that much" prices or at least they can order for you if they don't have it in stock. Another good source is if there is a fly club near you they are usually very helpful

Re: i want to get in to flyfishing???
The internet has a wealth of resources. Google "Fly Fishing 101" and start reading. Then, go buy an inexpensive graphite 5wt and a cheap click-and-pawl reel, line, leaders, tippet and a box of attractor flies and go fishing! Taking a casting class or going with someone who can teach you the techniques is a big help too.

Re: i want to get in to flyfishing???
Most graphite rods are pretty capable. If you want to go a little nicer, but still inexpensive, look at the lower level Redington and St. Croix rods. I have a pfleuger *** that I use occasionally for trout and it casts surprisingly well for the $40 I paid for it. I don't feel like I catch any less trout because of it's price. I'll upgrade at some point, but it works for now.

Yeah it can be a lot of fun fishing those small streams with flies. I pretty much taught myself how to cast. And learned some more from a buddy. Still have a lot to learn but I have basics down pretty good. I think you will be happy with deciding to fly fish. My first rod was a fenwick 9' 5 wt i bought for 50 bucks I think. Then I used a entry level redington redfly I paid around 75 for. I think you could probably pick up an Okuma package outfit for under 100 bucks. That is rod/reel/line and maybe even a tapered leader.
Good luck man and feel free to PM me with questions if you have any.

Re: i want to get in to flyfishing???
Pick up a book on how to fly fish. A good one will cover casting basics, gear basics, and fishing basics. Search this forum and see what is recommended. I went to a fly shop and asked them for a recommendation and bought a book from them. Well worth it.
There are a lot of videos on Youtube.

Don't know where you live but your timing is perfect. This weekend one of the best fly fishermen in the Northwest is giving a free lessons this weekend
Westmoreland Park Casting Pond (South end)
Portland, Oregon
9:00am
bring a rod , reel line and leader
as for an entry level outfit there is a huge market of high quality used gear out there as for brand new i'd suggest going to a fly shop to get equipped as opposed to an all purpose outdoor store

Re: i want to get in to flyfishing???
It starts with "primarily for trout", but there are so many species out there and they are all fun to fly fish for. You're gonna love it though, you should definitely learn to tie your own flies as well.

"The Curtis Creek Manifesto" is an entertaining primer on fly fishing. Some of it is a bit dated but it still has lots of good info.

you can also check out the Ross packages. The rods a good and the reels will last a lifetime. They range from 100 - 200 for rod/reel/line.

Re: i want to get in to flyfishing???
I would go see Don at River City and tell him what you want to do. He typically will set you up with package and cut you a good deal. He has a large selection and good prices.

Re: i want to get in to flyfishing???
The best way to learn is to hit a river with someone that knows what they are doing. Before you go spend a couple hundred bucks on low end gear- that you will regret inside this trout season anyway, find a buddy with extra gear (and every fly fisherman of even moderate ability has earned that ability by collecting way too much gear,) and get them to take you fly fishing three times. Three- because the first time you try it you will be useless, the second time you will be useless until that switch in your head goes 'wait... it isn't hard at all!' And the third, so your spouse can get used to you being gone all the time and you can still get away with calling it a 'lesson.'

Re: i want to get in to flyfishing???
AJensen-My first setup was real low end. And it had nothing to do with the way I learned the basics. Low end has nothing to do with catching fish or learning the basics of fly fishing. I don't believe that a high priced rod/reel will help him to learn how to cast better either just my

Re: i want to get in to flyfishing???
purchase a copy of The Curtis Creek Manifesto. I read mine yearly and usually every few months. I would not buy a cheap outfit like they have some places for $49.00 or whatever. I did and it was discouraging to cast with the horrid thing. It was bulky and unwieldly, at least for me. I bought a used rod that cost way less than a hundred bucks and wow it made a difference. Check out Albright, Ross, Redington

River City is a good place to go to get started. Don will fix you up!
Words of advice.
Cutthroat trout are an aggressive fish that come readily to a fly. Try them out before going after Deschutes red sides which are tougher.
Avoid going straight to using an indicator. It's a cheap short cut to success. Learn to cast correctly, which is tough with a bobber attached to your line. Learn to work a dry fly to rising fish or swing a wet fly/
When you've learned to catch fish these ways and you want to use and indicator then go ahead but learn the basics first.
