Default Effective or a waste of time?

I am ready to venture out in the boat the first time this year and I have caught enough sturgeon already so I am going to set my sights on steelhead or springers. Would it be effective to troll the lewis or hogline in an area that marks fish and wait for a fish to take? What bait or plug would be best? Thanks!

Coyote-
If it were me I would troll herring or mabey a spinner if I could not find bait. You never Know what could come your way. I would go lower than the lewis though. Mabey down below longview towards claskinine(sp) then turn around and come back. Staying on the Oregon side of the river making sure I hit all the likely water around the rows of pillings. Fishing is never a waste of time. Who knows you could win the ifish first springer award.

Have fun and be safe.

In my opinion, right now it's a waste of time for springers. Look at the odds.

The guys that are catching them right now are either very lucky or are putting in a lot of time per fish.

Try steelhead. If you don't have a boat that can fish the shallow rivers fish from the bank.

Wait until there are fishable numbers unless you just like to sit around a lot not catching. It's

Springers are out there but it's still about a month too early.

I think what you need to do is find out how the gil-netters are doing in the Youngs Bay Estuary. If they are catching fish than head to the coast and get in on some early springers.

That opened the first of the year and according to Gene Kane from Tackle Time no one has been able to get out and fish because of the bad weather that has hit the coast lately.

Gene said if it wasn't for the gillnetters getting a couple of keeper size sturgeon as incidental catch, he wouldn't of had enough sturgeon to fillet for the sportsman show this year.

Not that there is a shortage of sturgeon, just couldn't get out and fish.

Check the regs and make sure the season is open.

Good Luck
