RKB,

The Umpqua by Reedsport is supposed to have a great Stripper fishery ( big fish, state record of 64lbs.). Not sure when the best time of the year to fish for these. They have a great small mouth fishery upriver by Elkton. Best fishing is from early May thru summer months

I read a Monroe column about Stripers either in the Willamette or Columbia right here in town shortly after the Springer season. I guess they are line busting hogs.Sure wish someone would open up about it.

Shouldn't this thread be under "Bass and Panfish" discussion?

If you want real striper fishing, head out to Lake Mojave at the Colorado River,Laughlin,Nevada. They catch monsters out there, using a lure made by a striper fisherman guru.He has since sold his lure to Luhr Jensen. The name of that lure is the A.C Plug,If any of you guys have heard of this plug,it is absolutely amazing, guaranteed to catch the big ones. They make some for Smallmouth, and Largemouth bass too.

Chnookie, you may have something else on your mind. Most strippers are not caught they are bought. However, I love to fish stripers in Lake Mead. Zora Spooks for top water and a gray colored jig with plastic gray worms kills them. However the very best bait is live shad. Average fish last time I went was about 8 lbs.
Truely a ton of fun on topwater. I to would like to find them in Oregon other than on the Southern Coastal rivers. As I recall they come in after the springers (May) on the Umpqua and a couple other rivers down there.
Omnivore, this is not a salmon and steelhead only board. I find write ups about sturgeon, small mouth bass and shad too. I believe ifish is going to have a jetty fishing day for sea bass or perch in March. I promose that if you ever hook a 10 lb striper you will be hooked on them too. They are super fun when top water fishing. They explode on the surface when they take a plug.
Uncle Bob, what is omnidork, :depressed:
Nice meeting you again and next time it may be you in the pictures. Just don't give up.

RKB,
Your Right! Oregon has some of the BEST stripper fishing around. I'm not so sure I'd go looking for the "Hogs" though  . Wait a minute, you said striper not stripper, sorry.

I know I've read somewhere that it's rare to see a Striper as far north as the Columbia.

SnapS,
When did you hear about the Jetty trip? I was hoping to make this year's, but haven't heard anything yet. Do you have details? I can't wait until the "Sea Bass and Panfish" discussion gets going.

You don't catch strippers they catch you.

Seriously I think that Striper article was a product of someone having some fun with the media.

myco-mike, I have seen the date several times and it is at the end of anything put in by Bait of Eggos. It will be on the 23rd of March if I recall correctly. But then again, I'm of the age that the mind is not always as sharp as a file, or something like that. I believe it will be at the jetty in Garibaldi. Sounds like fun and a chance to push some of the competition into the ocean before 4.0. Then again if any of the CC boys show up we could use them as cut bait. Na, even the sea bass wouldn't have anything to do with them. Something about their smell
Look forward to seeing and meeting everyone there. It might be wise to bring the waders, you can never be sure who might show up.
I for one want to start fishing for everything in the area to fill in those dog days when only trout would be considered. Planted trout are a waste of our tax dollars. They are small and just don't taste much better that a leather boot. The boot has less bones and puts up a better fight.

Try the Coquille and Coos rivers. They have had a real problem with them down there eating the smolt. Stripers have been found spread out through both systems much higher than one would expect. There are some goofy regulations on what you can harvest so check them careful.

A few questions maybe someone can answer. Can you fish for these stripers in the surf. I know on the east coast that surf fishing for stripers is huge. A quick search indicated it's a spring fishery along the west coast. Is that true and are we talking about the same species? I think this has been touched on before a little, maybe by me, but does anyone surf fish for stripers around here. I would like to spend some time trying this. We spend a lot of time on the beach in Rockaway and would like to do some surf fishing in late May. I have an idea of the gear you need and techniques - more input welcomed - but need a sense of run timing, bite patterns, and fish movement. I found a Striper Forum on the web but it's an east coast thingy.

Thanks in advance for the help.
