Test was conducted on Sunday and Observers reported what they saw. This does not represent the entire test fishery, only a sample. Full results should be available later today and a decision will be announced later today on whether there will be a commercial net fishery on Tuesday.

The observers reported:
19 drifts
9 salmon (2 unmarked upriver),
18 steelhead (9 wild)
56% mark rate, 22.2% upriver,
33% of the catch were chinook.

The nets "can" go in on Tuesdays and Thursdays, but the decision is based on the results of the test fishery 2 days prior. The Columbia River Compact reviews the test fishery results and then issues a decision on Monday or Wednesday as to whether there will be a fishery and if so, whether 9 1/4 inch or tooth tangle nets will be used. Sounds like the fish market had part of the story.

The commercial gill nets have been approved for Tuesday, from 5 AM to Wednesday, 5 AM (24 hours).

Thursday has not been approved. If it is, it will be announced on Wednesday.

CRC Action Notice: March 8, 2004

For the fastest notice, call the "Hotline" Number on Monday and Wednesday afternoons to get the fishing season. The hotline number is 360-902-2500; press "1" for commercial and "2" for Columbia River.

The nets below McNary may be Tribal. I'm not sure what their current season allows. I believe it may be subsistance and ceremonial use only, no sales, but I can't find an official reference.

Lured, that link proposes 2 16 hour season options, but it looks like, from the CRC Action Notice and the recording on the Hotline, that a 24 hour season was adopted.

I'm a little surprised, since the guidance was that the seasons would be 16 hours. Not sure what that means, except there will be some tired netters tomorrow morning.

Pete...I saw that too and went  ? Kinda makes you wonder who's calling the shots or what is going on 'behind the curtain'.

I really wish they would start another matrix like they had last year. It highlighted the number of fish handled, the mark rate and running impact percentage. It made it much easier to keep up with them.

Did you notice that they are estimating 500-1000 fish for this period? Don't know if that was based on a 16 or 24 hour period though. I guess we'll see Wednesday.

Pete,
I'm guessing they're behind their anticipated catch and the impacts are still low enough they wanted to give them a few more hours to pick up some slack...

Zman...those were likely smelt boats as current regs for springers are established for a Tuesday/Thursday fishery with test netting on Sundays.

There was one boat netting in St Helens today we watched as a seal was picking his net,and as he threw his bouy to go scare it off,his boat stalled so he got a tow from a sportsman back to his bouy and had to hand crank his entire net.Now that was one tired netter I beleive it was carma that got him for drifting through the sportsman all morning.

Zman...I wasn't trying to pick a fight, just stating the regs and that no boats should have been netting salmon on Monday. If some netter was poaching, you should report them. Of course the CRC/ODFW/WDFW don't exactly make it easy for us to know when they are supposed to be out there, but we can try.
