Default Starter for my North River Inboard

I have a '92 NR jet boat with a Chev 350 carbed inboard engine. The last few times I've had it out I've had to "tap" the starter a few times before the engine turns over. Now it's intermittent. I've owned the boat for about 4 years and for all I know it's the original starter, so I figure it's probably time for a new one. What recommendations do you guys have? Are there "marine grade" starters? If so, are they worth the extra money? I do take the boat in the salt water if that's a consideration....
Thanks for any help!

I would take the starter to a "startmart" type place and let them rebuild it. They change out the wear parts, brushes and contacts etc., and it will be as good as new for 1/5 the cost.

I would order a new or rebuilt MARINE starter motor and install it. The marine ones, like the alternators are different. They usually have covers or something to keep sparks from setting off fuel vapors.

Then I would take the original starter apart, clean and grease with marine grease, bag it and use it in a pinch. Might need it when you least expect it.

Marine starters look the same as automotive. The difference is the marine are sealed so the arch from the brushes can't ignite any gas fumes that might be in the bilge. Use the marine grade so you don't have probleme with your insurance.

Boat starters should be USCG approved for the reasons stated above. I't no fun going for an unscheduled swim because your boat lit itself up.

Marine starter is a must ! I got a replacement for mine at NAPA in Beaverton ... it was a little less than $150 for a new one. Mine was kinda difficult since my Ford 351W Redline motor was discontinued many years ago.
