You serious a 1000? That means you caught just about every single trout they dumped into that little pond.

From my experience when I release stocker trout they usually end up as floaters. Now days I just catch my 5 fish limit and leave the rest for the kids to catch.
Theirs still some decent size bass in there though. If you really want to target the larger fish you gotta stay away from the smaller lures and light line. I'm sure once in a while you will still get bit off the little lures but theirs more chances of you hooking them deep down their throat.
Good Luck

Re: Vernonia?
I have never had days like that, probably because whenever I get into a hot bite with allot of small fish, I tend to go looking for the bigger ones that are feeding on the dinks. Crappie fishing as a kid in NC my buddy and me landed over 100 combined one March day. On a John Day trip we once had a kid keep count and he landed over 75 while we were floating--and he was pretty busy that day. He was using a rooster tail, and me a baby brush hog jig.I caught a fraction of what he did, but mine were considerably larger on average. How anyone can land over 1000 is truely mind boggling. I wonder what everyone's PB days were in terms of numbers, as maybe I have been doing everything wrong all these years. Little surf perch can give you impressive numbers too, and I may have broke 50 on them a time or two, I just cant recall counting.

Tar Heel you're not doing anything wrong- 100 fish between you and another guy is an epic day of fishing. Think about the logistics of hooking and landing 100 fish in one day. It's a rare and amazing thing when it all comes together. DS

Re: Vernonia?
Codeman,
I appreciate the pm you sent me about Brownlee and I WILL put your information to use, but as far as the numbers thing goes, just give up. The numbers are huge and the math doesn't add up, I'm sure you catch a ton of fish, just call it that. Don't claim numbers, it sounds rediculous. Just my 2 cents.

He is nothing special. it is not a comment on my fishing abilities (or my childs) just a comment on the fishing opportunities that are out there. I'll post it here too: i tied on 7 jigs ( because i was afraid that tying on 10 would be too many to reel in with 4# line) and was standing on a dock that had thousands and thousands of crappie under it. I dropped it down, counted to 15, (im guessing about 12 sec. or so?) and reeled up 7 crappie, one of which fell off when i dragged it on to the dock. I only did this once, because you kind of lost the fight and it was too much on my ultralight, plus i believe it isnt legal to have more than 3 hooks in freshwater).I just wanted to see if you could do it. We all laughed, and went back to our 2 jigs at a time. fishing very hard, ie, not stopping to eat, drink, anything, with 2 jigs, i caught over 600 fish in 5 hours. Once again, its not because i am great fisherman. someone who had never touched a pole before, could do this. You can fish ALL day long, with a bobber, and your bobber will never settle on the surface after a cast for longer than asec before it goes down, with out even taking a step. sometimes we just sit in a lawn chair and do this. most of the time you dont even have to cast, just keep four or five feet of line out, stick your pole out in front of ya, drop your lure into the 2ft deep water, wait 3 sec, and PULL in 2 fish, no reeling even necessary. THIS IS NOT A JOKE. its now that way everytime, but alot of the time. some may think that would make it boring or not mean anything. thats fine. to each his own. i LOVE STUPID fish. trying to figure out what fish want to eat, how to make them bite, etc, is not fun for me. I spent way too many trips doing that (and still do on occasion). some prefer that challenge, and thats great for them. I dont judge them for it. Now i go to places at the right times, where i know the fishing will be fast and furious. that is what I prefer.

Re: Vernonia?
Welp,
Here's video evidence of a guy catching 8 crappie in 3 minutes and the only thing stopping him is the end of the video....
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n1-6rfDZV3E
If it was someones motivation to catch a 1,000 fish, you could in the right place at the right time. It would simply be a very boring and very uncomfortable outing.
I can't imagine not eating or drinking or deficating for 10hours just so I could say i hit 4 digits.
Can it be done? I say yes. Why would it be done? I have absolutely no idea what the motivation of catching 1,000 dinks would be.

Re: Vernonia?
i agree, i generally dont last to 1k either. i only said it could be done. ive only bothered doing it a handful of times too. if the sun or being on my feet for that long doesnt get to me, my thumbs usually get way too beat up to handle anymore fish. if i could get over there more often, i wouldnt fish half as hard as i do. i know from experience, that for me, if i dont fish that hard, then 2 weeks later when i am home and recovered, bored off my you know what, i'll wish i had fished a little harder while i was there. Now i just take advantage of the fish when they are biting that way.

That's exactly how I am- you gotta keep at it even if you're not having fun anymore because you just never how long it will be before you have fishing or hunting like that again- lol!

I must say, this is a very difficult conversation to follow when every third post is deleted. There is alot of "not worth it", but it must've been worth it when you initially posted. If its "not worth it" just stop responding all together. No one believes the 1000 fish day, so just drop it. Nothing anyone says at this point will matter.

Re: Vernonia?
so apparently its truth stretching when i say it, but when the guy above me posts he can catch 2 fish on every cast and 4 a minute when he crappie fishes at brownlee, then he's telling the truth? is that how it works? guarantee you there are hundreds of people out there who catch crappie like this in may as well. how many more people posting catching fish like this will it take for you guys to open your eyes? just because youve never personnally experienced it, doesnt make it impossible. I thought starry flounder were a pure salt water fish. my friend from work claimed he caught dinky ones all the time in the multnomah channel when cat fishing. I thought he was crazy and pretty much told him he was mistaken, or flat out lying. I did a bunch of research and found out that the juveniles do in fact travel far up the river in fresh water. OOPS, i had to apologize. The first time i fished for crappie, when in college, at owhyee res, i caught 39 crappie and thought i was the best fisherman in the world. I thought i had caught fish all day long, it couldnt possibly get any better than this. I grew up chasing stocker trout on the clackamas, where you caught your five trout and went home. Then i thought i figured them out, caught my first 100+ crappie day and had to reevaluate what a good day of crappie fishing meant. Now, an average day, in may during the spawn, is 400. if they are difficult to find, in smaller groups where you spend alot of your day moving and locating fish, 300 might be a true challenge. if they are really in, in full force, you can easily catch 400 by noon, standing on one dock. remember, im not keeping most of these fish, and you'll end up catching the same fish multiple times. this is an honest assesment. ive watched family groups drive up, fish for an hour, completely fill up 3 coolers, and drive away.

I'm just saying that people who fish have been known to exagerate. Just because the only time I've ever seen anyone "filling coolers" with fish was during the EPIC smelt runs of the '80's on the Cowlitz, using a net with a 20' handle. DOESN'T mean that it couldn't be done....It's just hard to believe.
I still say I wouldn't want to clean 3 coolers worth of fish!!!
BTW - I've experienced the AWESOME Crappie fishing that the Snake river impoundments can offer. In fact, It's time for me to go back SOON!!!

Re: Vernonia?
i've discovered my personal limit is about 150 crappie to fillet. anymore than that and it becomes painful to my back, neck, etc. usually keep less than a hundred. i suppose if you have lots of people with multiple knives, the task would become alot easier. we are usually there at least 4 days, sometimes as many as 9. fish dont seem to keep well in cooler much past about 3 days. it takes about a day to drive home and unload, the last thing i feel like doing then is properly freezing fish. so we generally only keep fish for bringing home the last night, or the morning of departure. The first time me and my buddy really got into them, was in college, he had a small 14 ft boat. we started filling up a cooler first thing in the morning. around 2pm it was full, with about 450 crappie. we had to fillet them in the hot sun, sitting on some flat rocks. We learned our lesson. it was horrible also because we were new to the art of filleting and we spent until dark trying to get them done. now we just catch and release for the most part. and to those who think it bad to handle and release more fish than you want to keep, first of all, crappie are pretty dang reseliant, and secondly, im sure more crappie are wasted from freezer burnt back in the valley than from our catching and releasing. just a thought.

Codeman,
I have to give it to you man. You do not back down on your numbers. You are very consistent on the amount you catch. Early start in the morning (lets say 5am for giggles), and off the water by 2pm with 450 Crappie. That is only 50 fish an hour between the two of you. Nice work! I caught a crappie this big .

Re: Vernonia?
ya 50 fish an hour, from a boat, for two people in may, is really not knowing what your doing. that was the first time we started to figure them out. Ive maybe fished owhyee around 100 different days? something like that anyways, and lots of those days were just figuring the warm water fishing out. if you tried to fish the back of the bays in april, youd get skunked, but until may when they are spawning, and its a whole different atmosphere. we would be around boats who were slaying em, and we couldnt get a bite. we would try spinners, bass jigs etc, until we learned what we were doing. we both grew up on trout streams. now that i know where to look for crappie and the magic of a tube jig, any dummy with a rod can catch em. thats the whole point about owhyee res, anyone could go there and catch ten times more than you'd every want to clean.

Re: Vernonia?
Codeman I am with you! people can catch that many fish in a long day. My best day for crappie is about 800 in one day. I did not keep one. And I loved every second of it. I love catching fish! Good job on the great numbers. Please give him a break. Thank you!

Re: Vernonia?
Boy, I thought salmon/steelhead guys argued. Guess I'm tiny bubbles cuz I have a hard time breaking 300 springers a day. Oops, must have hade a sezure and double clicked the "0"s. Heck I'm lying about 3. Guess I better go back to I-fish Community. It's safer.

Re: Vernonia?
I grew up out there. The reason the rail line went right by the lake was because we needed to have a way to transport the tonnage of fish we caught with willow poles, string, safety pin hooks, and nightcrawlers. 1000 a day isn't even in the ball park for the olden days.
