Bankie vs. boater
Ok, this insn't meant to be a flame post but I have a couple of stories to share. I fished friday after work at KP park off the bank. I arrived and started fishing, not 5 minutes after I got my bait out a boat decided to anchor right in front of me. He was out a ways but deffinatly within casting range. It was aweful windy out and it was blowing his boat right into the bank, within about 35 yards. I yelled to him and asked him if he could give me some room which he immidiatly did while apologizing. This guy was a class act, we fished but to no avail and gave up a short time later. Well along comes saturday, the sturgeon derby, and I hit the same spot. Started fishing and not 5 minutes later here comes a burgandy sled who decideds to drop anchor about 50 yards in front of me. I politely asked them to move and got the finger, not the response I was looking for. I decided that I would fish just inside of them, I am a very competent caster and could put my bait about 5 yards from their boat. Every time I casted I got the finger. I guess karma was on my side becuase I banked four shakers and didn't see them hit one fish. Any ways, I just wanted to share the two different kinds of attitudes out there and maybe prove a point that we can all get along if we try.

Re: Bankie vs. boater
I remember fishing point defiance, (WA), as a kid for salmon and seeing what a buzz bomb could do to cloth seats when casted just right off the pier.
Its all about respect !

Re: Bankie vs. boater
been on both sides here and it sounds like the guy on friday was a class act. When fishing in a boat I always give the bankie preferance they have limited shoreline to fish. I have the whole river in a boat . to the guy in the sat. boat get a clue its rude s.o.b. like you that give the rest of us bad names.

Re: Bankie vs. boater
KP park is Kelly Point Park, its at the mouth of the willamette river. One of the few bank spots on the willy for sturgeon fishing. Very easy to get to, take Marine Drive west just past Terminal 6 and the entrance is on the right.

Re: Bankie vs. boater
This brings up a question that's been bugging me for a while. How far do I stay offshore in my boat to give the bankies room?
How far can you cast with one of those big poles?
(By the way, this doesn't include those who deliver their rigs halfway across the Columbia with their little boats... Is that even legal?)

Re: Bankie vs. boater
I've got a burgandy boat but I swear it wasn't me, or was it? If I was there and knowbody knows I was was I really there? Interesting.

Re: Bankie vs. boater
S.B. When I was in high school me and my buddy used to cast spinners from the catwalk in Oregon City. When boaters got too close we would persuade them to move out a bit with a 1.5 oz. bank sinker and spinner off the side of there boat. No fingers, nothin. They got the hint and moved out.
Now that I have a boat I remember those days and respect the guy's without boats. Apparently the knuckleheads that were out there don't know the golden rule. Too bad guy's are like that. Maybe I'll come down and fish with you and re-live the old days. But you gotta back me with the fish beater. Deal?

Re: Bankie vs. boater
rknh2o, I personally can throw my bait out there about 120yrds, I don't throw that far a lot of the time because you don't have to. I have seen alot of guys that can throw their bait out there 150ish but not me. I would say just give them room and if its not enough most of us bankies will politly let you know. Again, this is not a slam on boat fisherman as 99.9% of you are great people who I would love to fish alongside. In a pefect world we would all have boats  . Amanhee, I fish the catwalk all the time during springer season throwing spinners and 1.5 oz of weight too. I have never really had to much of a problem with the crowd down there but the potential is there. I don't know about backing you with the fish club though, I may be a big guy but I am a lover not a fighter!! A basic rule I live by is show respect and you will get respect.

Re: Bankie vs. boater
The force is definatly with you. I have to admit I haven't always remained polite about the issue after the birds and words start flying. Thank you for the reminder about how it should be done.
Basically I can chuck my 10 oz. about 120-130 yrds although most of the time that isn't really necessary. And no I have never taken aim at anyone or their boat. Although I have dragged a few lines in from time to time.

Re: Bankie vs. boater
Good Lord! 150 yards? That's more than a football field including endzones!
You know guys, I might have to go visit some bankies to get a better understanding of how far this is, and how the rigs are set up (I assume they rest on the bottom). At a minimum, it would give me perspective from a type of fishing I'm not more than distantly familiar with.
I've always assumed that if I trolled 100 or more yards off shore with my lines well off the bottom I was safe. Now I know better...

Re: Bankie vs. boater
We experienced something similar last fall just above the Kalama Marina park. Difference is we were in a boat , anchored well off shore at the edge of the channel. There was a guy in a small skiff that was running the guys on the beach's lures well past the boats and dropping them in the water. Then the guys on the beach started to cuss us out because we were in THEIR fishing zone.

Re: Bankie vs. boater
Dibblee's Beach March 2003.
I remember it well. We were trolling on a slack tide well away from shore & some knucklehead started throwing rocks at our boat which gratefully were missing by about 100ft. What gives? We watched them cast their weights which only exceeded the rocks by about 50ft, we knew where their bait lay. Stayed well away but this guy kept hucking rocks & shouting profanity. real class act. Luckliy he didn't hit the boat.

Re: Bankie vs. boater
stellie Ben, sounds like you did the right thing. There is really not many other choices but to keep on fishing. Sure, you could go home (not) or move spots on bank ( sounds like your space was limited) or get in a fight (go to jail) But there is no reason to give up your space. I'm now in the boat way more than on the bank. When we go by a bank fisherman we reel up. It's a boat rule. Same thing when passing up another boat that has lines out. Reel em up. What's it cost to be polite? I can't imagine feeling to good about hooking a fish in water another persons already fishing. Seems like a lot of other boaters fish right on by me though and don't take the time or have the courtesy to reel up. I suppose they would feel fine to hook one right in front of me. The older i get the more I understand the Next Generation's meaning of "Whatever".

Re: Bankie vs. boater
I'm sorry but asking a boat to troll more that 75 yards off the bank is ridiculous. And you throw lead at my boat and I WILL file assault charges. I've already talked to the state troopers about this issue, and they will make arrests. 75 yards is plenty fair. It's not like I'm trying to be a jerk, but I've already had my share of problems with jerks at Bonneville trying to hit the boat when I'm fishing 20 or more yards outside of their gear. I also carry a camera with a great zoom, so I will have a picture of your face, too. I try to be respectfull of the bank fisherman but I'm not playing this game.

Re: Bankie vs. boater
also not all boaters are jerks not all bankers are jerks. just be respectfull and catch way more fish than the guy that is in your spot. if you are one of the jerks arround me or my buddies chances are some 2 oz cannon balls are going to get really really close to your boat.(not a threat)
