Default 8 inches to much?

I bought a new boat and was planning on putting a Jackplate on the boat to hold the big motor. Here is my concern...The jack plate is a 8 inch setback which puts the big motor farther back. Is this going to effect my kicker? My friend says one of the guide boats had a bracket thing and it caused the motor to only allow turning in one direction. The little motor thrust would hit the big motor defeating the setback. He said the big motor had to be raised every time before they could fish.

Do you have a jackplate? How big is your setback? how does you kicker perform with it on there. gutter minds

I know 8 eight inches is all I got, but that might be to much for good control

Smiles, what kind of boat are you working on? I have a jackplate on my Crestliner alongside my 8hp Honda kicker and have no problems. Seems to manuver just fine trolling. I only went with a 6 inch setback on a manual plate (Cabelas) to keep things simple and not overdo the transom load. Crestliner has a 95 inch beam on the back end, so I do have lots of space.

Email me if you want a picture or more info. The plate really made a difference for me although I'm still playing around some with engine height. Didn't gain a whole lot in speed (1-2mph) but the handling is something else entirely!

Marty, I like your website. Good info on there.

I have a 6" plate (manual) on my boat and don't notice any problems with the kicker motor. I would think that every boat could be different though. If you have problems, then maybe try a kicker motor bracket that will set it back also.

I strongly suspect the 8 inches will be plenty of room to make the kicker perform properly. If not its only 6-8 inches to set the kicker back too.

Thanks for easing a lot of concerns I was having on the setup. I chose the 8 inch one so it wouldn't put as much stress as a 12 in one. 6 would probably be better but thats only 2 inches?

I had also thought of a bracket but after inspecting the design didn't choose that route just for the reasons I was contemplating above.

I appreciate the feedback ..will post some picks of the project boat as I get into it.

Its a 16 ft custom fiberglass boat. I have to go pick it up from storage so I don't have exact measurements on the transom.

I went with a hydrolic plate that I couldn't pass up. Have site will barter

I also need to add seats, motors, trim, finish top windshield? steering?...Its my project boat.
