I have cancer
Christmas eve day I was that told a cyst that was removed was found to be a maligant tumor. It was located in the worst place-no, not there. OK, the second worst place,
my casting arm.It can't be deterimined if all of the cancer cells were removed, so they want to take a 2x2x4 inch chunk of bone and muscle from my forearm and screw in a
stainless steel rod (I wanted high-modulus graphite with titainium guides; no such luck) then put my arm in a cast for a couple of months. I'm meeting with two oncologists
at OHSU Feb. 6th to dicuss the procedure and I'll then go to the Sportsman Show.
Since I won't be able to fish for awhile and have never caught a springer or a steelhead from a boat, I'm asking if one of you might be going out Thursday and would have room
for me. I hear alot about big fish here; can someone put me onto one? Please post your reply or email me: bukubass@yahoo.com.
Thank you for any thoughts or prayers.

Re: I have cancer
Buku, It sounds like your keeping your sense of humor over your illness, a great example for all. Unfortunately, I can't assist you on your trip to the mouth for springers, but if you have time and the ability to meet me in umitilla id be glad to take you springer fishing on the mid columbia. Over the whopping 3-day season last year, i was able to make two half days and caught 3, 2 keepers and a nate. Ive spent the year between wishing for another chance at this and they announced the season yesterday!! I hope this helps some!

BUKU,
You're in our thoughts and prayers.
I'm not really sure where you were wanting to fish...
I'll check my work schedule to see
if I am free to go fishing, oh wait, that right,
I'm unemployed.
Yep, I do believe I'm free. Gotta clear it with the wife and the weather man.
Watch your e-mail.

Re: I have cancer
In October 1991, three days before my 48th birthday, the doctors found a large tumor on my colon. I had 1/3 of my colon and 14 lymph nodes removed on my birthday. There was no sign of cancer in my lymph system or liver and I am now 25% of the way to becoming cancer free (5 years). I have ups and downs but more ups than downs. I hope that they caught the
cancer in time and you have a speedy recovery.

Bukubass
You didn't tell us where you live, only Eastern Oregon. To most Oregonians, Eastern Oregon is anything east of Troutdale. Most of the wetsiders don't know any other Oregon exists besides the Portland Metro area  .
Just as Cannonball offered, our springer run opens March 16th on the Columbia and I'd love to meet you and take you fishing. I couldn't have proved today but we have some steelhead around the Hermiston area.
Our prayers are with you, brother. Let us know how we can help.

Re: I have cancer
Oh boy, a trip with Uncle Bob!! Bukubass be sure to bring a fork and knife. Uncle Bob breaks out the cinnomin rolls and Cheddie Brauts with all the condoments.
You will never see a boat packed with so much food. He is just trying to figure out how to install a Gen Air Range without sinking the boat!
All kidding aside it is always a pleasure to fish with Rob. He catches one once in a while.
My prayers are with you for a speedy and COMPLETE recovery. I am sure we will also pray for the Skill of the Doctors.
by the way, will they be using the Fugi concept with ceramic guides? G-loomis or Lamiglass?
Best wishes
Bernie

BuKuBass,
I look forward to your membership in the Cancer survivors club. When I got really down I sometimes visulaized some of the fish and fishing trips from the past. It helped. Good luck.

Re: I have cancer
BuKuBass,
Sorry to hear about the bad news. I'll be praying for a speedy recovery. Here is another invitation, if your ever around the Portland area, I'd be happy to take you for a drift down the Sandy or Clackamas. I know the Sandy alot better though. Had much better luck on that river as well. Let me know if your interested.
Boat fishing is so much more better and easier than bank fishing and a lot less work too. Of course this is my Opinion.
God Bless,
 Smily

Re: I have cancer
On July 3 rd of 2000, (Right after My wife left)
I was at the Doc's for a check up and I told him to feel my neck and shoulder were it was swollen. He did and then looked at me with a real scared look on his face and said I will be right back.
Then 2 other doctors came in and felt it. Then they told me that I needed to go to the hospital right now and get an x-ray and a cat scan. I did and they told me they would call me on the 5th. So I went to the beach for the next few days with My son and Parents. at 9:00 am on the 5th they called and said I was scheduled for surgery the next morning and to be at the hospital at 6:00 am.
Now I was scared!! so I told my folks what was up and had to cut everyones stay at cannon beach short. The next morning I went in and they cut on me. After the surgery the Docs met with My folks and told them everything went well and they would have the results from the test in a couple of days. By the time I got out of the hospital the following day I thought , what the **** I am only 35 years old, I don't need this **** !!!
The worst was yet to come. the following weekend we had a big wedding to attend. I got the results on my cell phone on the way there. They said I tested positive to the cancer. My world just went to **** right there. I looked over at my son in the passenger seat asleep and just about died. I pulled over on the barren stretch of highway I was on and just went off!! I thought how was I going to tell everyone at such a happy time about my misfortune. I thought I would be able to hide it, I was wrong. When I got there My mom came up to me and asked me what the results were, I could not say anything, I just started to cry and that was the *****. Anyways I got totally drunk all weekend and just could not stop thinking about what was in store for me and if I was going to get to see my son grow up. Anyways when I got home I got a phone call on monday afternoon and they told me they had made a mistake and that I did not have cancer!! I thought what the **** !!! you don't do this to people, so I called my doctor and told him to re-test it , they had already done that and he said I was good to go. The relief I felt was un real, I just freaked out.anyways so I kind of know how you feel, I just ended up being very lucky and someone made a mistake. I hope everything works positively for you, it is just such a horrible disease.
Peace Superfly :depressed: :depressed:

Re: I have cancer
Buku, you've got lots of support on this site. I wish I knew more about springer fishing myself. I will try to learn this year.
Superfly, that was a touching story you told; I started to tear-up, glad it turned out okay.

Re: I have cancer
Buku....
8 years ago, I was diagnosed with Level IV, stage II melanoma. Which gave me a 25% chance of 5 more years. And I "wallowed" for about a month. Then I realized.....If it DID happen, I'd be "remembered for wallowing"!!! :-( So I sucked it up....and carried on. I'm almost 9 years out....OK, I have a few "interesting scars"... But I'm also a single Dad with 2 little boys who NEED me. You have the right attitude :-). Seriously....if you need to vent or talk.... PLEASE give me a yell....

Re: I have cancer
Roger, I finally found your message...too many forums. I've already passed on my wishes for a speedy recovery and hope we can meet up and go fish sometime this spring or summer. It sounds like your cancer was discovered early, and that's the key to successful treatment. EVERYBODY keep an eye out for pre-cancers (flaky skin areas and small wounds that won't heal), and get a physical every year! Eat right, wear sun screen and a big hat. Learn to put on Sun Screen properly, it makes a difference. Realize that a normal shirt is less than SPF 6! Finally, when it comes down to making a decision, the aggressive approach is the right one, from my (2nd hand) experience.
Anything less is VERY risky. I'm thinking positive thoughts for you, Roger, and expect the same from you. C&R, Steve
