Default Shoot thru transducer question

Helping a friend service his power I noticed that his transducer is mounted in a glob of silicone (glass boat). I always have heard that silicone will reduce the effectivness of the signal. He admits that he seldom sees fish on his readout but the bottom is clear enough to determine type. If it were me, I would remount the transducer in epoxy but I need some other opinions. I know somebody out there has an opinion.

silicone a pece of four inch PVC cut about three inches long to the bilge and fill it with cooking oil, get an end cap. drill a hole in it big enugh to run your wire threw it put your transduser in the oil put the end cap on, no need to glue. it works great you may have to turn your gain up some to mark fish but you get a great reading wen your running at full speed.
