Hewescraft Advice ....
Wondering if any Hewescraft owners could post some opinions .....
Have a friend on the cusp of buying a 16' Sportsman but trying to figure out which kicker motor to put on it. He is looking at either an 8 or 9.9 but the question is this. THe salesman where he is looking to purchase the boat is telling him that he has to go with an XL shaft kicker vice just a long shaft kicker. He called Hewescraft and was told he could really go either way. Is there any Hewescraft owners out there with a 16 Sportsman that runs a standard long shaft vice the Extra Long shaft that would post their experiences as to how the long shaft performs? Any issues, etc...
Thanks!

Re: Hewescraft Advice ....
I've got a Yamaha T8 high thrust on my 160 Hewes Sportsman. I just bought the boat a couple weeks ago and have only done the motor break in so haven't fished it yet. I can't image needing an extra long shaft as mine sits well in the water well, especially with me sitting back there to till it.

The 8hp is fine. Your hull will only allow the boat to do maybe 7mph WOT or 3/4 throttle...Had an 18 Sportsman in 2003. Same BF8 was perfect.

Re: Hewescraft Advice ....
My guess is that either the dealer or Yamaha is over stocked on XL's. If that is the case, Yamaha will sell these to the dealers for less. With sales as bad as they have been, an extra $50 - $100 is big for the dealers. I used to work at a Yami dealer.
Either motor will troll ok but the XL will drag while in the up position. My long shaft drags a little.
Make sure your buddy takes one of these kickers with him when he takes the test drive.
You might tell him to call the Clemens guys in Gladsone, OR. They might give him a better deal and he won't have to pay sales tax. I noticed that they had quite a few in stock when I was there today. I used to sell a lot of motors to Washington customers.

Re: Hewescraft Advice ....
You'll want your prop. below the hull. Just make sure the cavitation plate on the troller is close to level with the bottom of the hull. That will put your prop. low enough to have some reverse. Otherwise your thrust will all be pushing against the transom and alot of splash but no go. Also you'll troll straighter especially in a 16'.

Re: Hewescraft Advice ....
Thanks for inputs , I will pass them all along. I have an 8 long shaft on my 18' Alumaweld Stryker and it trolls great with no issues and transom height looks about the same on the Hewes, but wanted, and appreciate, the inputs from some Hewes owners. He did in fact get a quote from Clemens, as well as several other Hewes dealers. He specked out exactly what he wanted, boat, motors, accessories, FF/GPS, seats, the whole works, and e-mailed it off to to dealers in OR / WA. The best quote he got was from a dealer in Washington, Clemens actually came in almost 4K higher. And I as I found out when I bought my Stryker from Stevens last year, that while you don't pay sales tax when you buy it, when you register it in Washington you have to pay a personal use tax, which is the same rate as sales tax, so the same amount of money, just a different name.
Again, thanks for all the inputs .... greatley appreciated!!

Not if you buy the boat in WA and then have it powered in OR. It's a little extra work but you'll pay the WA tax on value of the boat... then go to OR and buy the motor with no sales tax. This may make more sense if your buddy is buying a main and a kicker ($$$).

Re: Hewescraft Advice ....
I have the Hewes 180 and run a Honda 9.9 LS not the XL. It won't cavitate at the speed the kicker will push the boat. Sales ploy.
