Default Halibut Trip??

Was talking with Gene from Tackle Time yesterday and after I hung up I wondered....are there 15-20 people that would be interested in taking a Halibut trip with Gene out to his 600' deep honey hole?? Its a long day up to 12 hours the limit is one halibut and the cost I think is $170. Let me know here if you think you might be interested, I think the trip would be sometime in May.

After reading about the Tie Master problem, I think I'll pass. What's your kickback Jim? I think Jennie should get part of that for the free advertising here.

My kickback?? What the?? Ironhead...if you want to accuse me of something then ask for the facts first and then feel free to do it right here. Tie Master has no problems what do you mean by that?

Tie Master problem?
What Tie Master problem? Tie Master is great!
Anyway, so is Gene at Tackle Time Charters!
I'd go, but I'd be a real bummer out there at sea, I'd guarantee you! :depressed: (ish, tummy!)
But I'd love to see an ifish group get together and go out!
Cool idea!
Any takers? I'd love to hear the stories, and steal some of the bounty from you!

having known gene for many years he dosen't need to give kick backs to fill his boat ,it is a first class out fit, and at that price is well worth it.his courtesey while fishing sturgeon has built his clientel, I have bummed bait off him several times.and he has always had time to bs about the fishing ect.

Calm down, I'm just messing with Jim. Sheesh don't be so sensitive Jim

Does sound like fun. I did read somethings about Tie Master and Jim but I don't think it's in issue here.

Got to go check out Tackle Time link.

$170 for one fish and a 25mile boatride (each way) seems a bit high. You'd have to be loaded on medicinal marijuana to go... I went with a friend on his 22ft BW Revenge and two guys spent $75 each in gas for the trip - two six cylinder inline Merc 135hp's running half throttle. Seems like a huge profit built into that price...My two cents. Doc

I can get out and back for 45 - 50 gals, for a cost of around $100 at the dock. Divide this by 4 people and it looks like a pretty cheap day.

Some of my fishing pals also think that splitting up the gas at the end of the day covers the trip. But they aren't making my boat payments, insurance payments, paying dollars and sweat doing maintenance, buying and replacing gear, cleaning everything up after fishing, and storing the boat.

It costs me multiple thousands of $'s per year to run my boat out for 4 or 5 halibut trips, 8 - 12 Salmon trips and a few bottom fishing trips.

And, lets see what you neglected to mention for those profiteering Charter folks:

- Toll free phone line to take reservations.
- Office space, heat, lights, and office supplies.
- Someone to (wo)man the office.
- Advertising.
- Business liability insurance, and boat insurance.
- Purchase of a 42' Commercial craft - $$$,$$$.
- Radar, radios, finders, etc., etc.
- Boat license.
- Commercial halibut license.
- Moorage and other dockside fees.
- Boat maintenance and upkeep.
- 20 rods, reels, line, terminal gear, bait, nets, gaffs, etc.
- Salary for Captain and 2 mates.
- Huge diesel burn rate out and back.

They certainly aren't getting rich on halibut trips, or any other ocean trip they make!

Mystic Thanks!

I just thought it would be fun to get a bunch of ifishers out there but a few will be fine. I know that boats that aren't mixed and matched are just more fun. Anyway...lets see if anybody else is interested and then I will call Gene and make arrangements. Paul I know you and your Girlfriend are coming...hustlerjim not sure about you. Paul you realize that by having your girlfriend come will keep alot of the guys away that have a hard time being outfished! Afraid my wife has the same intestinal fortitude that Jennie was referring to so it'll be just me...andbody else??

Not to mention the experience and knowledge it takes to keep the customers happy and coming back. I went on a trip three years ago in Westport that was sooooo much fun and we caught soooooooooo many fish that I call and make a reservation for the first Sunday of the Halibut season every January first! Then do a bottom fishing trip on the same boat a few weeks later. It has to be the same boat and captain though. $160 for a Halibut seat on the Freedom out of Westport is well worth it! Aaand you will probably come back with more fish than just one Halibut. Get the 'Buts quick and early and stop for some Lings and bottom fish on the way back in!

PAY THE $170...ITS WORTH EVERY PENNY!!

Great Idea Jim. It is a lot of fun to know the group that you are fishing with. I plan two trips each year for my friends and co-workers. It does get to be a drag though trying to get every thing together.

I would love to get an early spring trip together for Lings out of Westport Wa. This is two ling country and we usually get some nice yelloweye also. Anyone interested in a ling trip out of west port give me a mail. Its with Captian Phil Westrick with the ultimate charters. If you are at the show stop by coho motel/charters and ask about Phil. He is a first class act and bustes his tush to make the trip worth while. His trips are usually around the $100 for this trip and its 10 hours. We have limited on our Lings for the past three years.

Hey.......sounds like fun.......I may be game.......fill me in with the particulars when you get them.......I may even be able to provide a second boat......hehe 24' Trophy......we'll see...anyhow let me know...

And P.S. For those that obviously don't own a boat..... The average MPG that a boat gets on the ocean IN IDEAL conditions is about 3 MPG. Let's see......3 MPG.......70 Miles....no wind, minimal chop and swell.....hmmmm thats 120 gallons.......at $1.75/gal..........hmmm.....I'm no Mathematician....but I think that's about $210.00......just for GAS. Think about it......you dont have to provide gear in most cases....you dont have to provide maintenance on the boat...........hmmm.....
I think maybe you should think a little more about this.....
WHAT IS THE RIGHT THING TO DO WHEN YOU'RE INVITED TO GO ON A FISHING TRIP WITH A FRIEND OR ACQUAINTANCE THAT HAS A BOAT?
ANSWER......OFFER TO HELP OUT WITH EXPENSES.....and Keep the boat and gear in good shape.....This is common courtesy and it will surely guarantee you return invites on my boat.......
The price that you pay on a charter guarantees you .....a knowledgeable captain that KNOWS WHAT HE/SHE IS DOING.......and crew that KNOWS WHAT THEY ARE DOING......ALL THE GEAR YOU NEED.....A GOOD CHANCE OF CATCHING SOME NICE FISH... TRANSPORT FROM POINT TO POINT AS SAFELY AS POSSIBLE.....and a heck of a lot of fun in most cases......Just think about that instead of damn.....XXXX dollars is too much.....ITS REALLY NOT.

Sorry to drag on and on like that.....I apologize....I'm sure those of you that own boats or run charters can relate....

I'd rather be Lucky than Good!
It is easier to catch fish when one's line is wet.
