exhuast clog identification? 2 stroke Merc

I was reading on another thread about clogged exhaust, I have a 1998 2 stroke Merc which has been used for trolling. I currently have the carb pulled and am cleaning/rebuilding it. How do I identify if my exhaust is plugged, how do I go about clearing it? The motor ran pretty rough prior to pulling the carb, started ok but had a tough time staying on idle and would miss and hesitate when increasing the RPM's, it seems like it struggled to get to full Rrpms as well.

If the exhaust eleif holes are plugged and you are low on power with good spark and the carb isn't plugged then remove the powerhead and lower unit to remove the carbon
