Default Slow Cranking

Great forum Guys

I posted this some time back but am unable to find it now. I have 1970 Johnson 85hp that the starter cranks real slow it seems to be getting slower and now it is not turning fast enough to start the motor. I am looking for some place to test the starter, prefferably in the SE Portland area.
THANKS

Already done that, cleaned all connections including grounds, new battery (actually 2), cranked with no spark to plugs to eliminate bad timing, bypass solenoid, only thing left is possibly bad cables or bad starter weak under load. And with the plugs out I can turn it over by hand so there is not a problem with the engine dragging.

1970! Good chance the brushes in your starter are all goobed up, old cooked on carbon. There gets to be so much resistance at the point where the copper brush meets the armature that a great amount of heat builds. Problem gets worse and worse untill it barely turns over, and uses so much juice from the battery that there's not enough left to fire the engine. A starter rebuild/replacement is in order. If you are mechanicly inclined you could possibly take it apart and clean things up, replace brushes maybe. Hopefuly the armature would not be too worn to resuface but, that starter might be 40 years old!

I had that same problem, I took it off the motor and the guys
at the auto electric place rebuilt it. It's just East of Clackacraft and
the name is ABE or something like it. Under $100 and I didn't
have to mess with it. Check your soleniod, while your at it.

Thanks for the info. I will check it with some new cables (should replace them anyway) and then see about getting the starter rebuilt
Thanks Again
