Washington: Halibut will open as planed May 1 with quota saved for an additional 4 day July fishery.
In Oregon, I am not familiar with normal seasons so I can not comment.
What I can tell you is in both states, the halibut seasons are dependent on the ability of anglers to avoid catching yelloweye rockfish. If either state catches 3 metric tons (only a few hundred fish), all deepwater fishing will be shut down. In Oregon, all fishing deeper than 20 fathoms will be shut down. In Washington, anything deeper than 25 fathoms. This does not affect salmon.
Also, you can't retain any yelloweye when you have halibut on the boat so if you catch any, you will just have to let them float away.
