Default DB etiquette

I witnessed some, no the ABSOLUTE worst behavior in a boater yesterday. This person anchored right upon another boat which had been in the hole for quite awhile.

It got worse. he didn't like the first place he anchored, so he pulled up and re-anchored right in the middle of the hole!

I watched the first boater calmly tell the new arrival that he was anchored in the hole. The boater responded with a round of obscenities.

It gets even worse. The new arrival then was PURPOSELY trying to cast over lines of the fist boat, all the while cursing and telling them that he could "anchor anywhere the *^&% he wanted to".

Finally DB number two leaves the hole and boats downriver, leaving a parting curse at everyone else.

What is wrong with people? Where did our courtesy go? What happened to sportmans etiquette?

Sorry, I am ranting here.

I'll be watching out for the guy in a green 15 foot home-built wood driftboat. It has white rockplates on the side. He was on the Wilson on 01-29-02 in the morning.

Used to be a guy at the mouth of the Kalama every fall that would cuss you out no matter what happened. Muscular balding dude who would proudly row his driftboat out into the hoglines with the powerboats. Always fished without a shirt on, no matter what the weather...we called him "The Naked Rower".

This ol' boy would anchor next to you and then rope back so his boat would slide directly behind you and sit on top of your lines. If you politley told him he was in error....he would unleash an unending stream of profanities that would basically ruin your fishin' day.

One day he lined up 100yd.s below us after we were set up. Every time we dropped out with a fish he would cuss us for drifting past him. Whether we powered the boat away from his stretch or quietly quick-netted the fish, he'd cuss and swear at uswith a tantrum that would last for 20 minutes.

Unfortunately, many otherwise enjoyable days were ruined for me and my family by this angry nutcase. To bad angry/ crazy people have to pollute the beauty of our streams and rivers. I work hard at 'not' getting angry when I am on the water.

Peace....Hog

Some people are just to ignorant to understand, and those are the ones you should better just leave alone because you don't know what to expect if you confront them.

Heard that story today from the guy who bought your dad's boat. What a bummer.

Im not sure if its ignorance or just a plain case of the &$$. they never catch fish anyway, usually have no patients and will leave soon anyway.

i'm going to be on the river in due time-drifting. I have checked archives on ediquite on ramps but only touched the surface about ediquite on river. How about if your anchored and i want to drift by. Any proper procedure? How far away should I be? On and on I'm sure it goes but heck I don't want to be in anyones way when I get out there so I want to get as much info. before I ever get to the river. I will be asking enough questions in the near future that you all will be saying not this guy again. I have been on the bank for 10 years and I learned alot of what not to do buy having people do it to me. I don't want to start off that way in the boat.

what I try to do is stay out of the hole.sometimes this means you drift behind or right along side in narrow slots. if you have the room to by pass all of the above then thats the way to go.the main thing is dont anchor directly above or below the other boat, there is a lot of water to fish.Im really happy to see others as concerend with this as I try to be thanks.

That type of behavior just blows me away. My father and mother raised me to be polite to everyone (with a few exceptions ). I'll find another spot to fish before I even come close to getting in someone else's way. What's wrong with these people????? If they would only get it through their heads that we're all in this together.

I agree with Artwo....been there and seen the nasty things they do when confronted. Better to just leave them alone.

It seems as though every fall during low water that i see smoneone anchor their boat in the only route through a riffle, and then yell at you when you bounce off the rocks/gravel bed in your attemp to go by them. I guess some people think they own the river themselves.

I've wittnessed fishermen on the Clackamas/Willammette being just plain mean and rude. I've also wittnessed others being very courteous and friendly.

To the first mentioned, I'm gonna go ahead and fish whether your an a-hole or not. But, if you happen to need my assistance for anything, forget it. I'll be too busy ******* you off by fishing. Being rude to others just makes you look like an idiot

To the second, thanks for taking the time to be a decent person. The world needs more of you. If I should ever be around when you need some assistance or bait or whatever, just name it. You can have the shirt off my back.

Cully,
There are more good guys out there than jerks so don't be too worried. If guys are anchored fishing a run, try to float behind them or if there isn't enough room, cut as close as you are comfortable doing in front of them but try to keep your oars out of the water they are fishing. If you mess up, say you're new to the sticks, you're sorry and drift by. If you anchor up and have enough room, leave some room behind you for others to pass by. I've had guys do just about everything from running into me to slapping their oars through the run I'm fishing to casting behind me running their line over my boat into my rods...You get it all. Everybody isn't on the same page out there with regards to skill level and river knowledge, but courtesy goes a long way. Here's some high points to remember. Point towards danger/pull away from it, give bankies a bunch of courtesy, drift close to them or out of the water they are fishing, don't low hole people (meaning jump in below guys plugging a run) hold above and fish it after them or drift by, if you accidentally drift through water guys are fishing keep your oars out of the water as a gesture of courtesy as much as an apology, and SMILE. It is fun afterall.

Saw drifters today on the siletz. I was on the bank. One nice hen for me. Bright as all get out. Home to late to have for famlly dinner. Saturday looks good for the grill. And maybe one more fish. Still on the bank for me. I love to see those drifters tough.
